How to clean our inside cast sediment bowl?

Does anyone have a way to clean out the old rust from inside the cast iron sediment bowl without damage to the surfaces where the screen slips over?

I use Rust 911, comes out looking like new. If it's really bad it
may take a couple of soakings. I bought a pyrex bowl and a desktop
coffee cup warmer for use in the winter as the solution doesn't work very well in cold weather.

Can ya get 00 steel wool in there? I know it sounds like work, and odd, but sometimes those old ways are best. Of course get all the strands out when done. I've seen my grandad clean up wheel cylinders with steel wool before putting a kit in them before.

Sounds like a candidate for the molasses solution.

Mix 3 parts water to 1 part molasses, submerge the part. If it's not too bad an overnight soak may be enough, if it's real bad it can take days. Rinse off with water and dry or it will rust again in short order.

You can also use Evaporust but Rust 911 is a lot more economical.

I do not recommend sand or bead blasting. It is just about impossible to get all the sand or beads cleaned out.

My experience and my opinion.

Please only use a chemical rust remover! The inside of that cast bulb is a rough sand casting with a small seam,nearly impossible to ever get any sand out. It will wash through to your carb jets eventually.

Many people believe as do I that sand blasting is not a good idea because it is very difficult to get all the sand particles out.

I take my carb off at least twice a year and spray it out along with the cast sediment bowl and screen using Valvoline Carb & Throttle Body Cleaner. Works great for me!

Jerbo - Here's another vote for EvapoRust, I love the stuff. In my experience it takes longer than the label suggests, it's not at all unusual for me to leave things soaking overnight for heavy rust. Also, every couple of hours I take a toothbrush and scrub off what has already converted so that fresh rust (is that an oxymoron?) is exposed to the chemical. (For those wise-guys out there, no I don't get up in the middle of the night to do this!)

I echo what Bob C states, Rust 911 does an incredible job removing rust from anything including gas tanks and radiators.

I purchased a can of carb dip to clean out my Tillotson and a Rochester For a different project. When I was done I gave the sediment bowl a dip for a night. Rinsed it out used lots of air pressure to blow it out, had to repaint after the dip, no biggie tho.
No problems so far I’m a couples tank of gas in now!
