Default Distributor Installation 40 V8

Good morning.

So how do I make sure that I don't install the distributor 180 degrees out from the position of the engine when I match the distributor tab up to the crank shaft?

Thanks.

The tab is offset slightly from center, so it will only go on one way. Do not force it on or try to pull it in with the mounting bolts.

Cut the heads off of 3 bolts, use these studs as guides, remove caps, slide distributor on studs, turn rotor until it falls into slot. You can try it several times, and test the feel of when it drops into slot. Remove 1 stud, replace with bolt, and so on.

This is an excellent method, particularly as you can only get one hand in the cramped space. Only two headless bolts (studs) needed however, an inch or so longer than the mounting bolts.

The top left bolt where the condenser grounds is difficult to access. Notch your condenser ground to slip under bolt making future replacement easier.

Possibly, this picture will show you that the slot for the distributor tang is offset if you look closely. DD
