Default How to gracefully remove windshield glass ??

Anyone know how to remove windshield glass from the frame without breaking the glass or damaging the frame ?
.
I got the top piece off, soaked the 3 remaining sides & old black tape & cork seal with paint thinner over night, used a razor utility & putty knife trying to loosen the tape inside the channels the next day, no luck.

Any expert advice greatly appreciated.
Need the old glass for pattern to get new glass cut.
Thanks for looking.

If you plan to have a glass shop cut new safety glass, I suggest you take the old glass and frame to that shop and let them do the removal and reinstall.

I did a 6 part series on repairing the windshield. Part 6 covers making a template.
Suggest you watch the series on YouTube.
I think you could try laying the windshield flat, and use a piece of wood, say 1 x 4 pine, tap on it with a mallet in each lower corner alternately, while you hold the windshield glass.

Not a 5 minute job.

I laid the assembly down flat on an old piece of carpet, top of the frame off, sprayed penetrant around the edges and tap with a block of of wood horizontally tapped here over there every where. The hard part is holding the assembly from moving, I put a shot/ sand bag on the glass to help hold it still. A helping hand would have been nice!

Very sound advice. Obviously the voice of experience speaking.

There are two places that you have friction/sticky to overcome: between rubber and the frame, and between the rubber and the glass. I've had better success concentrating my single edge razor blade between the rubber and the glass, and worrying about cleaning out the frame after I have a little room to work without the glass in place. Liberal application of light oil or paint thinner while you're doing it for lubrication.

There is a very little bit of splay on the side pieces outwards that you can take advantage of to loosen the glass from the sides. If you can get the sides released as described above then you are a good way there. Wood and light "persuasion" will work well.

#4 above sounds like the best plan of attack.
The glass I removed was delaminated, and once I had several pieces out the rest of the glass came out. Got lucky.

I used JJ's method and it worked quite well. I have a new glass and a 'c' channel made of either rubber or neoprene the glass shop gave me. Anyone now have hints on hot to install the new glass without cracking it??? tks, jerbo

Just curious as to why you didn't have the glass shop do the job?
