Default Engine Number

Found the engine number on my new 53 Merc while wire brushing the rust off. Just like the I.D. plate said. Right hand rear, top of the block. QC9849* is how I read it. Does that number tell me anything?

Thanks for those links. The Ford truck forum was the closest to having useful information but for some reason the charts all came out as html. The paint chart would have been exactly what I was looking for to decipher my trim and paint codes but it is unreadable on the forum.
On my engine number I wonder if I am mis-reading that first letter. Maybe an O instead of Q?

For the 53 I don't see any paint code 95 either. I'm starting to think that Canadian built Fords had a different system of codes.

QC could just be "Quality Control". There are many stamps on these engines that may have a meaning but that meaning has been lost to us. Inspector stamps were common on US manufactured engines but a lot of them just have a date code that can be interpreted. The rest are likely inspector stamps at different job finishing locations in the plant.

I wondered if the last two digits (49) might be the casting date of the block?

Interesting and you notice that fanfare maroon has a different number code to what my car has on the tag (29). It must be a Canadian difference.
My 53 Merc, has white roof and green body. My best guess is Sungate Ivory roof and Timberline green on the body but I am notoriously poor at colour judgement. Here is the tag showing trim (QAA) and paint (95).

Your tag looks a lot different than the US manufacture tags. The body parts catalog has info for the US built Mercury models. Some cars had it in the chassis parts catalog. I know that Canadian vehicles had their own catalogs since I've seen them on flea-pay now and then.

On the date codes they used alpha characters in the US for Month and Year but I don't now about stuff made in Windsor, Ontario.

Yes, the H53 on my tag indicates my car was assembled in August of 1953. Exactly one year newer than my 52. I don't remember where I got that information but if I did, I might also find the rest of the code translation.
