Info on this truck transmission
I've had this transmission for awhile, came with an engine I picked up. Would be interested what it might have come in originally.

Re: Info on this truck transmission
Trans is a 1938 truck and looks like a 8ba cast iron bell housing .

Re: Info on this truck transmission
Set up like a 48-52 truck trans, with an F-2 / F-3 rear mount. The rear mount "feet" are often cracked, tho.

Re: Info on this truck transmission
Marko & Ross,
This did come bolted to an 8ba that I bought, guy would only sell if I bought both. I notice the differing opinions on its date 38, 48-52. I think I'll keep the bellhousing and scrap the trans, been stepping over it for 20 years. Certainly appreciate the the info.

Re: Info on this truck transmission
The trans does appear to be earlier than a 48-52, but I believe the rear mount is specific to those years. It's a non-synchro 4-sp, nothing I'd care to drive these days.

Re: Info on this truck transmission
The serial number on the case puts it in the 1938 serial number range

Re: Info on this truck transmission
Bob C, that PTO was what has has kept me curious about this thing. What might that have been used for, like a winch on a wrecker? As to value do you mean the actual parts of the PTO?

Re: Info on this truck transmission
Like you said the PTO could have been for a winch or hydraulic pump
for a dump truck. https://www.ebay.com/itm/48-49-50-51...EAAOSwoP5flhCK |

Re: Info on this truck transmission
If the cluster gear and the sliding gears are good (little to no wear on the teeth and no rust pitting) I’d be interested in them. You’d have to take it apart to verify this so that would be up to you.

Re: Info on this truck transmission
to run a winch you need a PTO that has forward and reverse. they are usually quite large due to the extra gears inside. PTO shown looks to be a smaller one direction unit to me, as in dump truck

Re: Info on this truck transmission
Matches the trans from my 1.5 ton 38 but on them the trans mounts through the 2nd crossmember. It does not have feet on the mount it's a 4 or 6 bolt flange mount. The pto on the truck has a lever to engage it in the trans, then it had another lever that must have been able to engage the gearing at the back of the truck. I have not yet figured out what the truck was prior to me getting it other than I got it from an old garage I think it might have been a wrecker.

Re: Info on this truck transmission
This transmission is a good example of how swapable parts are on old Fords. The case is 1938, the rear mount and open drive no older than 1942. This is an example of the difficulty with many of the "identify my _____" threads.

Re: Info on this truck transmission
Guys, thanks for all the info, like 38 coupe states, a lot of our old Ford parts can have quite the convoluted history. MacVP, I will dissect the trans sometime after Christmas and see what shape those gears are in.
