Default Tillotson Carb Rebuild?

I got this carburetor from a friend who tells me it was on his Dad's car for as long as he owned it (not sure how long that was). The car was not driven for the last 22 years. He was taking the car apart just to get it back running, when someone bought it from him but wanted a Zenith carb that he also had.

He says it ran really well from what he can remember when the car was parked. You can see the mud daubers have had their way with it and the throat is almost solid with a nest.

Question is should I try to take it apart and soak in some carburetor cleaner and then put it back together and try to run it, or do you think I should automatically get new jets for a rebuild? Do I have to take out all the jets before soaking in the cleaner if I do proceed that way?

I have never had anything but a Zenith carb and this will be an education.

Sorry, don't know why it posted the picture twice.

I'd just give it a good cleaning inside and out, get a fresh gasket, put it back together, and fire it up. They're good carburetors

Like JBill says just a cleaning and new gaskets.

Thanks. Do you use carburetor cleaner? And how long should I allow for a soak? I did a search on the forum and see many different ways to clean.

Just my opinion that, Tillotson appears to have considerable corrosion and will not clean up very well, you may have trouble removing the jets, which you have to do to clean it properly, they also suffer from warpage.

And they all work, so pick your method. You will need carb cleaner and a "straw" to clean out the passages.
