Default 1930-31 Hood Latches

Guys, I have a stupid question. Which way is the correct way to install the 1930-31 hood latches? With only two mounting holes they can be installed facing either way. Should the "U" be installed facing the fender or the engine? Mine came in a box when I bought the car.

Hart - 1000 words attached. The open side of the "U" faces the fender. The solid bottom is to keep the latch from falling under the hood when it's open.

JayJay is correct, but I have turned mine around so that the latch does not scratch the fender paint.

ROFL. Great replies, each with very valid reasoning. Anyone care to post a tie breaker? Thanks, Guys. I found probably because I am using the rubber pads with a lip that when the latch is screwed down, the bottom of the latch rubs against the pad preventing it from flopping around. Mine stand straight up because of that friction so I guess either way will ultimately work.

Well, this is interesting. I looked at my pickup (which was painted by the previous owner) and the hood latches are installed the way hudson describes - with the opening towards the engine, likely for the same reason he gave. There are a bunch of other non-authentic things as well so I'm not putting any credence to this. The picture I took above is my Town Sedan, and I believe that is the original (and logical) 1930 installation.

Look at it this way, Hart - if this is the most complex decision you have to make as you build your car, consider yourself lucky.
