I would put water soaked towels on the top of tank and firewall for vapor and paint protection making sure to cover neck and stuff a good size one undeneath very well water soaked and carefully weld away. Short hits with the mig. You should be fine . It’s the outside of the firewall . Crank it up enough to get good penetration . Have a helper to keep an eye out. You should be fine.
