34 Ford headlights
What would a set of 34 headlights in decent shape be worth? Buckets are good but would probably need to be re-chromed, lights are complete with prism lens.
Thanks, Stephen |

Re: 34 Ford headlights
A lot depends on the condition of the inner, non-stainless steel ring at the opening of the lamp housings. If they are badly rusted, they can be replaced, but that's a big job if done correctly so that the outer stainless steel rim that holds the lens in place fits flush up against the stainless steel housings.
Note on one of the ebay-listed lamps that the outer rim fits poorly and further, that the seller did not post a photo with the outer rims off so that you could determine the condition of the inner ring. Based on the photos that he did provide, it is likely that only one of the lamps will be usable (if you care about how the rims fit) as once that inner ring swells from rust, the rim will likely never fit correctly even if you remove all of the visible rust as the culprit is the inaccessible rust behind the ring. If the inner rings on your lamps are not rust swollen, then that ebay price would be a fair one to both buyer and seller. |

Re: 34 Ford headlights
As David stated, the inner rings are most important. In the past, I have replaced many of the inner rings. It is not a quick and dirty job if done correctly. You have to completely remove the inner ring, file down the welds that held them on, wire brush the headlight bucket to get a clean surface, and then spot weld the new rings in place. Unless the stainless buckets are very nice, it is not cost effective to do it, if you have to have the bucket dents removed, and then get the buckets polished.

Also noted that many of the reproduction headlights and parts do not fit all that well. I had a customer concerned about the lense mold numbers of originals! Newc

There are some who think Ford had an employee whose job was to sort the lenses by mold number so that each new car had a matched pair. I seriously doubt if even Augie and Fred Duesenberg had that preoccupation. |
