Default 1936 hand brake painting ?

Hello!
I'm taking apart a hand brake handle and trying to make it like it came from the factory. I was wondering if it was painted before assembly or after?
Thanks
Mark

Before as the attached parts weren't painted. The button on top remained chrome plated as in previous model years.

The hand grip and button are chrome, the remainder is painted (on standard and commercial vehicles.)
