Re: 9" dif for 55 fairlane
I am using a '57, 9" rear end on my '55 Courier sedan delivery wagon. No modifications at all. I believe the '57, 58 and '59 banjo housing rear ends are same and should fit.

Re: 9" dif for 55 fairlane
I found the narrow 9 inch rear were seldom seen and very expensive. Another option is an 8.8 from a Ranger pickup, or an Explorer. The Ranger will need the perch cut off and welded on the bottom, and be sure to true the housing after a big weld.

Ranger rear ends come in 2 widths, 56 1/2 WMS to WMS and 58 1/2 WMS to WMS. Most of the 8.8 rear ends I have found are the wider ones. I believe the 55 Fords were 57 1/4 WMS to WMS. The 7.5's are the narrow width but most have smaller brakes. The complete brake assembly from the smaller brake rear end is a direct bolt in exchange for the larger brakes. The narrow rear ends have an off set pinon. Don't know how if that will be an issue or not.
