Default 1936-1939 Pickup Spare Tire Locking Cap "aka The Frying Pan"

After looking at a Fordbarn thread about 1935 Pickup spare tire mounts early last Saturday morning I went to that auction site and found another piece of the puzzle for my 1939 pickup. I was astounded to see what has been described as "the frying pan" locking spare tire cover for sale. The listing said 1935 Ford(not correct 1936-39 pickup), and the pictures looked good so after an offer of $60.00 that was accepted this arrived yesterday. After looking it over I think this is in original condition, if it was on a pickup it wasn't there for very long. You can see marks on the inside from the hubcap clips from a wide five wheel but very little other damage. The stainless needs a touchup but I'm thinking I'll leave the paint alone and just use it as is and it fits perfectly. Now for the issues:

Number 1: no key for the lock (have already contacted 32Phil for key making).

Number 2: The original metal strap? that would go over the spare tire that was attached to the spare tire mount was either torn or cut off back in the day on my pickup so I need that part. What was left was about 2 inches long and I drilled out the rivets before I had all the spare tire mount parts powder coated. Any help with that over tire metal strap is appreciated and I will post this in the Wanted Section as well. Thanks, Gary U.

The way to tell if it still in original condition is the plating on the hinge. Most that get restored have the hinge painted black. That is not how they came from the assembly plant.
If you do a search, I believe Don Rogers has posted diagrams of the whole assembly.

Hinge is plated on this one not painted. I can see how that would get changed if restored as the hinge is riveted to the pan. Thanks for the tip.

This is what you are looking for. This is the metal cap for the 1938-1939 Ford pickup spare tire 'frying pan' cover. I purchase this on a 'frying pan' several years ago because it is the same as a 1936 and had all the internail pieces that I needed. (key, lock, spacer, spring and lock ring)
If you are looking for one, send message.

Now that adds another wrinkle to the locking cover. Here are pics from an original booklet titled 1939 Ford V-8 Trucks and Commercial Cars. First picture from the cover page looks like a plain black cap but the inside description and drawing show the earlier cap. I'm staying with the earlier cap and just need the metal band that goes over the tire and attaches to the tire carrier. Thanks

Well I certainly agree --- the stainless cover definitely adds to the looks.

As we all know, pieces migrated from years to years and within dealerships. Sometimes it difficult to be 100% sure it's exactly correct. Either looks nice. The stainless is very nice. The smooth black version is very unique.

Best of luck finding the outside main cover piece that either cap can be used on. They are out there!

They certainly are; years ago, prior to internet, I was trying to piece together the straps to suit locking hubcap for my 35. I found one of those 'frying pan' caps, complete with strap, which I shortened and reconfigured to suit my application. Tossed all the 'crap' I didn't need! Oh, the good old days!
