Airplanes were pretty exciting stuff in the late 20's, early 30's.

You see a lot of pictures of the Ford Trimotors, because they are the same era, and of course they are Ford's

Bernard Pietenpol used Ace motorcycle engines and Model T engines to start with the Sky Scout but the design was updated to the Air Camper to be built with model A engines and then for Corvair, Contenintal, and others . The air camper is a design that's easy to get plans for and easy to build if a person is a home builder since the Pietenpol family is still around. Kits for some of the major assemblies are available. With some of the new model A engine blocks & heads showing up, there may be more power available from them. Especially the 5-main version and aluminum versions when and if they come about.

Back in 1928 thru 31, aircraft design was still in the wood & wire stage. Round motors like the Wright J5 were new in 1926 so it was all new technology but they were replaced in 1928 with the new J6. The Ford Trimotors were new tech until around 1933 when later technology was already making them obsolete. When Edsel and Henry purchased Stout Metal Airplane company, they hired some good people to develop the Trimotor from a single engine Stout design. Bill Stout didn't really design or develop much of these aircraft so Ford quickly found out he was more of a salesman than a designer. Stout was out in 1930 and guys like Harold Hicks did a lot of the development work. Ford wanted a Skyfliver but it never materialized. Ford was tiring of the aircraft company and so it didn't last much longer after the Trimotor production shut down. Harold Hicks helped develop the model A engine when it didn't put out much more horse power than the model T engine. In three weeks, with his recommended design changes and a new Zenith carburetor, they finally got it up to 40 horse power. He and Larry Sheldrick didn't get along well after that.
