Default Upper Rear Main Seal 18-6335

I have a 1937 21 stud engine with the 18-6335 upper main seal. What is the proper way to remove the seal? I was thinking if I tapped it on one end I would be able to roll the seal out of the block. I thought I should ask for advice before inflicting possible damage to the seal. Can the seal be reused?

Thanks, Zeke

See this posting below there is a good photo of the part, you may be able to pull it out by hand but it can and should be reused. If your block is 37 the part number is not 18-6335

Terry, my block has the 18-6335 upper rear main seal as shown in the service bulletin in the link you attached and the rear main cap is not machined for the lower seal, 78-6336, as discussed in the link. I think the 78-6335 and 78-6336 parts were a later model year addition.

My engine did not come with my car originally, so I have no idea of when it may have been produced.

I have the reprints of the 1932-37 service bulletins and the 1938-1941 service bulletins, but I could not find the bulletin that Brian provided in either of those publications.

Thanks for your reply, I always pay attention to your posts.

Zeke

Your proposed removal method is correct...they can sometimes be very stubborn to move. They are originally fitted with a sealer; depending on the sealer, they can sometimes be almost impossible to remove intact. If you are successful in removing it without damage, yes, you can reuse it. good luck!
