Default generator/alternators

I bought a generator/alternator that worked fine for a while, and then it jumped to 10 amps and did not go back down to zero after the car was running for a while. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Check battery connections and water level. What happens when you turn on the lights? Are you still 6 volts? get a meter reading across battery posts mine reads 6.6 when engine is not running. Good Luck

Is it a generator or alternator?
