32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
After looking in the 32 Ford Book, I wasn't able to determine if the gearshift know on my Model 18 deluxe Tudor is correct in having a raised (well worn!) V8 emblem on it. It looks original but is it? Also, is the greyhound or quail right for a radiator ornament and was there a moto meter that was correct for a 32? Thanks for the help.

Re: 32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
The '32 Ford had a round gear shift knob with no emblems. This knob was dark brown or black. As far as the radiator caps go....the greyhound or quail were aftermarket items. The '32 Ford had the distinctive round cap with what looks like a sundial pointer on it.

Re: 32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
Regarding the round black gear shift knob, please see the paragraph at the top of the second column on page 5-28 and with regard to Ford-released accessories for the 1932 models, if it is not on the list shown on page 19-3, Ford did not offer it.
The first knob to have a "v-8" molded on to it was late '36, but given that yours has a raised "V-8" it would likely be a '37 knob. |

It looks so natural but I had a feeling that it wasn't right for the car. Is it a 37 from the picture?

Re: 32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
From memory...that one was used 1937 and 1938, with the 1938 painted a tan color. Said paint is always worn off, surviving only in crevices, and I think I see some along the inside of the "V"...
The quail offered by Ford for Model A's and the Greyhound Ford offered in 1934 have both been picked up by the modern aftermarket and adapted to about everything Ford made with a visible cap. The greyhound (a Lincoln mascot) was also popular in the 1930's aftermarket, and any vintage aftermarket catalog like Western Auto will feature all sorts of greyhounds in multiple quality/price levels and sized both as a radiator cap addition and as a front fender mascot for bicycles! |

Re: 32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
DavidG,
I have a brown and a black '37 style knob with the V-8 embosed in it. I have always thought this was the '36 late knob. Did Ford ever put out any documentation about this Embossed '36 knob? JimOH |

Jim,
I may run across something specific as I go through the stuff that I mentioned to you recently. In the meantime, the Club's '35-'36 book classifies your two knobs as late '36, presumably standard in the case of the black one and deluxe in the case of the brown one. |

David, what is your opinion of the period photos showing quail caps, were they aftermarket?

Re: 32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
Bick,
Based on the available evidence (lack of drawing and engineering release in Ford Archives and lack of Ford part number on the part), my opinion is that they were period aftermarket items. David |

Re: 32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
I will start looking for an original 32 gearshift knob but I like the v8 one that is on it now. If I change it I will be careful taking it off and will try to get it to someone who has the car it belongs on.
I bought a 33/34 greyhound cap off ebay a year or so ago. The cap wasn't it too good of shape and the greyhound ws a little pitted but whole. I was going to adapt it with an aftermarket 32 cap, but I think I will just keep using the original cap that is on the car now. I couldnt get the cap apart for love or money but one day i held the greyhound and gave the cap a light tap with a wooden mallet and it fell on the floor and broke. Go figure! |

Re: 32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
It may help that it is a carryover Model A part and was also used on '33-'34s.

Re: 32 Ford Gearshift knob and radiator ornament
From what I've read, all greyhounds were aftermarket until '34, before then the dealers sold them but they were not an authorized Ford part.
