Default Production parts query

Being unable to find a 60HP fan, 73-8600, a picture of one, or anyone who has ever seen one, and the archives having only one very poor drawing of one, how can I ascertain whether or not one ever even went into production? This is driving me bonkers. Really. Thanks for any help. Lawson

Pete: Great picture, however, that's a 2.0" or maybe 2.5"hub. I've seen plenty of THEM. I'm speaking of the one with the 4 1/8" hub. 73-6800

Could it be a Truck Fan?

Nope. FWIW, I have scavaged a hub from a truck fan and am trying to cobble up a 73-8600 fan, but the hub on the truck fan is 4 1/2" and would take a lot of finagling and skill and specialized lathe fixtures to shorten it, if it could even be done and come out looking right. Believe me, I've checked that one out, as well as everything else I can think of.

I'm wondering presently if the 73-8600 EVER EVEN WENT INTO PRODUCTION? How do I go about finding out that info? I'm calling the archives in the morning.

Ask if an engineering release form survives for the part. If it does, you can order a copy and it will show when it was released for production and for what applications. It likely will also show when the part was deemed to be obsolete and no longer offered for service. Are you confident that you have the correct part number? If not, the Benson Ford Research Center folks won't be able to assist you. They're archivists, not car buffs.

I'm having a hard time with the part number you refer to as well. Shouldn't the prefix for the part number be '52'? For example, the part number for a V8-60 cylinder head is 52-6050...

David and Pete: That is the part number in the green book and also the part number shown on the drawing I got from the Benson Ford. I believe that is also the part number shown in the 1939 Ford parts catalogue according to Don Rogers. Thanks for the research tips David, I'll try to follow them. You are probably more experienced than anyone I know of in such an endeavor.

And yes Pete, the head has a 52 prefix but the transmission case has a 74 parts number, so it looks like they couldn't make up their minds as to what numbers to go by on the 60HP engine and it's various acuterments.

Lawson - I agree with David that the only certain way to know is to obtain the Engineering Release form(s) for this part. The attached example should be similar to what the BFRC Archives will provide, assuming there are any ER Forms for the fan.
The attached example is for the Rear Belt Rail Trim Cover - Part No. 67-813482 dated August 27, 1936 which was released for the commercial closed cab chassis (Model 67-810) and the big truck closed cab chassis (Model 51-810). The card, combined with the appropriate parts drawing, gives the story. Every time the part changed, obsoleted or something else happened, the action was supposed to be recorded on an ER card (or at least that was the system).
It's possible to link the ER cards to the numbers and letters contained in the box in the upper right hand corner of the engineering drawing. The number of entries in that box will give you an indication of the number of potential ER cards with one card per line in the box. I've seen engineering drawings for parts that were designed then never used, so it's possible the fan drawing you have could fit that situation.

If I'm reading the 1937 parts book correctly 73-8600 was only used on commercial
vehicles, passenger and truck were different.

could this be the one you want?
blade 17”
the hub depends on how it is measured
4” between the flanges, 4-3/8 from pulley surface to back of blades

Nope. That's the big truck fan. I have savaged one of those hubs to use/modify, just in case.

Lawson why do you need a Pickup Fan? It's a display engine for appeareance so the car vs pickup fan I wouldn't think would matter.

The 73-8600 fan as listed in the 1938-40 Catalog is for 60HP pickups (81C and 922C). The 78-8600 common fan was used in the cars both 60 and 85. I can show a photo of that page if needed.

Michael:

You just brought home a point that had temporarily escaped my memory. Sadly, that is happening more frequently these days. Thanks for the kick in the fan--ny. (Pun intended.)

With my engine having the optional commercial transmission attached, I want to use the commercial fan, if at all possible.

Counselor .... In ALL REALITY, and in the absence of ANY ill-will, just how many visitors up there at the museum do you think will walk up to your engine, look at it for about fifteen seconds, then turn and walk-away mumbling:

"That fan is completely wrong for this engine. I'm NEVER coming back to this place again!"

Well, how many, Lawson? How many would even KNOW the difference? You're gonna use-up all of your toilet paper if you keep on worrying about this frikken' fan!

Once it finally gets put on display, the accompanying sign with the display needs about one paragraph stating what it is, and five paragraphs telling the story of the great efforts by Lawson to make it correct !

"Fly Boy" .... In retort, I can only say, I take pride in my work and "I'll know the difference".

Lawson, as others have suggested, and I totally agree with them, use the passenger car fan with the 2" hub on your 60hp display engine and call it a day........ please stop beating yourself up over this!

How many people bought a new truck with an anemic 60 hp engine? (My buddy had a 37 tudor years ago and the car would go faster in 2nd then in 3rd.) Those fans might be extremely rare, like a 40 electric clock, a letter from the dealer to the clock company was required to even get one to install.

Next time, round up the parts for your project first, not piece meal as you go. You will save yourself a hell of a lot of effort and stress.
