Hi Steve, I had a diode problem with my alternator draining the battery when not running & took it to a auto electric shop & they put in a new one for $30.00. I woult assume you could get one from an auto shop if all else fails. Good luck, Joe PS Might try Brattons in Mt. Airy, MD.

You still need a cutout with Toms regulator.Diode cut outs make the generator produce a higher voltage to overcome the diodes resistance.Old Ford generators tend to throw solder at 8 volts, your choice.

My A came to me with a twelve volt battery and burned out bulbs. I replaced the 12 with a 6 volt. The ammeter showed the same rate of charge with the six as it did with the twelve. I alway thought a generator would safely charge to the potential voltage of the battery, it was current flow (amperage), not voltage that slung the solder. Maybe I am wrong. I often am. Could some other barners who have more experience in this area correct me? I noticed the six seemed to have more cranking reserve than the twelve that was in in it. Is this always the case, or was the twelve just weaker than the six?

Yes, it's the amperage that threw the solder. You should never exceed about 12 amp draw continous on the stock long generator and about 15 amps for the powerhouse.

The same size 6 volt battery should have more amps than the 12 volt battery. I seem to get more years from my mistreated 6 volt than I do from the 12 volt batteries on my modern cars. By mistreated I mean I park the car for 6 months of winter, then jump in and the Model A starts right up without me having a battery tender on over the winter time. I'm still using the same 6 volt battery I bought from the recycling yard 6 years ago and it's working great.

Power is measured in WATTS and VOLTS x AMPS = WATTS.

So a 6 volt battery at 800 amps has the same total power as a 12 volt battery at 400 amps.
