Restoration Qs...rumble/ trunk seat platform
Rusty Nelson and I have had a number of conversations on how the
rumble / trunk seat platform was attached too the side subrails. I think Rusty and I both agree that it was screwed with a # 12 or # 14 sheet metal screw,....and more than likely a round headed slotted screw. There will be 3 on each side. For the people with original, unrestored cars, how is your platform attached? Screws or rivets? Thanks... |

Re: Restoration Qs...rumble/ trunk seat platform
I should add that if you have a rumble seat in your roadster or coupe where you can't see the rivet or screw heads, you can look under the back of the car and tell if there are screws or rivets protruding through the subrails. This is not a real big deal, but it would be nice to know how Ford fastened the platform to the subrails for our restorations. I suppose it is possible different assembly plants did it different ways, but Ford was pretty specific in how the assembly operations were to be done.

Re: Restoration Qs...rumble/ trunk seat platform
My unrestored Aug 1928 roadster with factory rumble seat has 3 rivets on each side of the platform that mounts to the subrails and 6 rivets across the front edge of the platform that mounts to the body cross rail member.
Since the front seat pan is also installed with rivets that makes me think all? the floor pans and platforms were probably installed with rivets. |

Thank you for your reply!

Re: Restoration Qs...rumble/ trunk seat platform
One of the previous owners said the car came to Calif during the 30’s from PA.
I have yet to find any factory ID stampings on the cross member under the front seat or anywhere else I looked so I don’t know for sure. The gas tank date is 8-15-28 and the registration number (A326xxx) is in the proper range for Aug ’28. |
