History Channel - Hopped Up Roadster
Did anybody else catch the History channel over the weekend about that hopped up 30 or 31 roadster that some woman was driving around 1930 to 1933 and was running moonshine in Franklin County, Va?
It was talking about how she was able to out run the cops back then. They showed were she took it to some shop and a guy put on something that looked like a turbo charger. Does anybody know who made such a setup like that back then or have any info on it or seen the same thing on the History channel over the weekend? |

I saw it too and am wondering the same thing. it probably wouldnt be too difficult to use a modern turbo setup on a model a. That would be something, however not much room for an intercooler.

Hmmmm...
There were quite a few production cars available with super-chargers back in the 1930's ( Cord, Auburn, Duesenberg, and Graham), but I've not heard of anything that far back being turbo-charged. |

They said it was a supercharger. I saw one on a 32-33 v-8 phaeton last year.

Re: History Channel - Hopped Up Roadster
Years ago I was acquainted with a guy who bought and sold banger stuff at swap meets up and down the West Coast. He had quite a trove of stock parts as well as a collection of early Ford speed accessories. He had a '33-'34 pickup with a "B" engine that had overhead valves, twin downdrafts, and a fanbelt driven device that he called a "blower" and always made the point that it was not an actual turbocharger, just a more primitive means of boosting the intake. This blower mounted on the manifold side about where the generator was on the opposite side.
This guy had all kinds of one-off and homemade speed accessories for Ford A,B, and T motors. His barn was like a museum of early hot rod ingenuity. I heard that he passed away about 10 years ago but don't know what happened to all of his stuff. |

Re: History Channel - Hopped Up Roadster
yes, I saw that! The whole thing looked hokey as hell. The "Keystone cop" shooting at her tires. But through sheer pluck, and good luck, she made it through! HAH! I figured the "Thing" she had bolted on was a H.C. head. Oh well, It was a good story anyhow!

Re: History Channel - Hopped Up Roadster
There is a 37 Ford V8 around here with a supercharger. i asked and was told that it was an accessory in that time period. Maybe the early V8 guys could help you out on this.

Re: History Channel - Hopped Up Roadster
I found the episode online! Here's a link to it, http://www.history.com/videos/americ...ory-of-us-boom
The part with the Model A Roadster is about 33:00 minutes into it. It was a super charger. I also found some more info on the person who was running the moonshine in the roadster. Here's a link to that article, http://www.thefranklinnewspost.com/article.cfm?ID=9297 Now the question is who made the super charger and I wonder how fast it would run with one on it? |

Re: History Channel - Hopped Up Roadster
I didn't think much of the rewrite of history that series was trying to put across. They NEVER mentioned what make vehicle the gal drove, could have been a GP Bugatti for all we know.
