Default Gas gauge

Am working on a gas gauge that looks quite different than most. It has a single arm coming off of the side, instead of the wire coming down from between two pivot points. Is this a early 1928? It has the magnified lense, oval shaped. It was frozen tight, with carb cleaner and penetrating oil, I was abe to free it up nicely. This is the only one I have seen this way. I have worked on dozens of these. Jon

It's sounds like a early 28, post a pic for a definite answer. Dudley

It's an early 28 gas guage. I also have one, but the last time I looked for it I couldn't find it.

Thanks for the pics Tom. That is it exactly. I guess I'm going to get this rebuilt very gently. Notice the spring type, on the back of the arm with the gauge strip. I wonder if this is for adjusting or to eliminate the bouncing effect.

Does anyone know how to free up the star shaped inner part to remove it in order to clean the lens. I have soaked it in carb cleaner for 2 weeks and it is still stuck tight. There is a thin plate that is rusted that surrounds the lens. Is it supposed to be black or plated nickel? Thanks for any help.

Remove the rod and guage then slip the two sides that hold the rod over a pice of 1 x 4 board clamped in the vice. Now the face will up and I soak it with laquer thinner. Then you press the center tool down hard and turn CCW. This has worked for me when they are very tight.

working on the one that Tom posted the pics. about. I also found it would not come loose. So I set it in the vise and sprayed carb cleaner on it. Then I use a o-ring pick to go into the threads and work ou the old gas as much as possible. Used more carb cleaner. I then used a pencil torch, to heat the outside of the gauge. It only has a flame about 3/8 inch long. When I saw the cleaner start to bubble in the threaded area, I then used the wrench. It turned out very easly. Hope this helps. I wouldn't use any bigger torch. It could ruin the gauge beyond repair.

In an early '28 gas gauge, the little spring on the level indicator is supposed to hold the indicator lightly against the glass, thereby keeping the glass and the gauge clean.
