Not sure, but remember using 1/4" or 3/8" rachet extension, and years ago there was availablre a multi-use tool w varied dimension square ends for removing plugs (years ago)

A guy - The square end of a 3/8" ratchet should fit in the fill plug on your rear end (be sure to clean the dirt out). Then you just turn the plug out to check and fill with oil (caution-some of them can be really tight). The level I put in mine is just at the bottom of the fill/check hole. In most cases, if you stick the tip of you little finger into the hole just touching the bottom of the hole; if there is oil on the tip of you finger, it is at the proper level. I hope this helps.

He may have the slotted type plug used in 28. You would use the same type tool as to adjust the tie rod ends. If he has the square type, the hole is probably wallowed out and might want to think about replacing them when he gets the old ones out.

A long leverage arm is the secret of getting either type out. If it is the more common plug with a square recess I put the business end of my 3\8 socket set breaker bar in the recess and turn it until it locks, then tap on the end with a brass hammer. If you need more leverage, slide a pipe over the handle.

"fill to spill" is common for most any type of gear box. With the car sitting relatively level pump oil into the fill hole until it runs out. Let it settle down until it is level with the bottom of the hole.
