Default which way does manifold clamp go??

hi, installing my manifold clamp, and not sure which way it goes! Les Andrew's book states the SMALL diameter side goes on the manifold.... but just playing with it, sure seems the LARGE diameter side would fit better around the manifold. I've had it installed before, and was just re-installing it after having the motor out, had not noticed the Les Andrew's instruction before. Maybe I've had it upside down all these years? :-)

The nut MUST hit the convex side. So you are correct in thinking the large diameter hits the manifold.

thanks Tom (just putting the engine back in, crank and flywheel all balanced!). What do you mean by "nut must hit convex side..." ?

The nut must press against the convex side. In other words the raised center faces OUT.

For clarity, the perimeter of the washer or "clamp" must contact the manifold flanges or ears. If you reverse it and the center of the clamp makes contact with the manifold flanges you are almost certain to snap an ear or two.

Oops! I need to read more carefully!!!

Are we talking about the four washers on the manifold studs, or the clamp that holds the muffler to the manifold?

If it's the muffler clamp, the large diameter goes up, around the manifold.

I think he is talking about the exhaust pipe/manifold clamp. It will really only fit one way.I don't know what the book says, but if you fit it up there your eyes will tell you how it goes.

yep, talking about the manifold clamp to muffler.... Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for clarifying, that must have been a typo in the Andrew's book. Sure didn't look right! :-)
