Hi Steam, I think that hub is heavy enough that you would not cause a stress line failure through it, but yours is an interesting question. Another question might be if the additional keyway would allow expansion of the axle taper in the hub when the hub/brake drum assembly is torqued to the axle. I gather from your avatar that you are a machinist - can you guage whether the hub moves in too far when you tighten the axle-nut? Let us know what you find...

the axel keyseat was not the best eather.i have no way too cut a new keyseat other then taking the axel out.i fastened the key too the woren keyseat with 2 allenhead capscrews.i could have welded the new key in place but what would i do if i had ro remove later?i also used a shim too take up the woren axel also.i torked the nut down and only time will tell.you don't have many options with a woren out axel keyseat and a breakdrum with a woren out keyseat.the rear axel seem's too be a common problem too solve but with very little options except to through money at it with alot of down tilme.

dear sir
thank you for your input.i also thought of that but how would you and what would you use to cut this.the next size would be 5\16.making a step key would be no problem but what about cutting the old slot out too 5\16?i can't think of a way except too remove the axel and set it up in a milling machine and then cut the keyway.

Back in the day the apprentice machinists learned to make parts with files and cut keyways with coping chisels. The new keyway wouldn't HAVE to be a full 5/16"--just clean it up square and flat, then make a compromise key to fit. A bit finicky and tedious, but faster and easier than taking the rear end apart, I'd think.
