Odd Transmission Noise
Part way through a tour this weekend my car starting to make a scraping noise from the transmission area when at a stop with the clutch in and the car in gear. If the clutch is out and you are driving, its fine. If the clutch is in and the car is in neutral, its fine - BUT if the clutch is in and the car is in any gear then there is a scrape, pause, scrape, pause that will increase with engine RPM. Ideas?

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
Some problem with the clutch disc, I'd say. When the clutch is in and the trans is in neutral, the disc is free to follow the flywheel/pressure plate. When the trans is in gear, the disc is held stationary and the flywheel/pressure plate revolve around it. Maybe a spring has come loose on one end, or the rivets have come out of the facing at one point.
You might be able to see the problem through the inspection plate. Joe

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
maybe front transmission bearing? Or if the pilot bearing is dragging it could turn the input shaft a bit.

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
If it only happens when in gear and the car is stopped, the input shaft is not turning. The pilot bushing or bearing is at this point spinning around the stub of the input. So its either the pilot or as mentioned the disc is comming apart and scraping the flywheel or PP.

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
I would suspect a worn out or dry throw-out bearing.

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
I would think a throwout bearing would make noise whenever the pedal is applied, he said its only noisy in gear.

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
Well I had planned to pull the steering out this fall and have it rebuilt since it has more slop that I like so I guess I'll just pull the transmission too and peak inside to see what it up.

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
Our tranny makes the same noise, It's the front shaft bearing! does the noise somewhat go away when you let off the gas?

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
Nope. It slows down but sounds like my cat scratching on the door. Its engine rpm dependent and goes away if the car is out of gear or the clutch is engaged in gear but it the clutch is depressed and its in gear (any gear) you hear the noise.

Re: Odd Transmission Noise
Sounds like it must be the pilot bearing, or maybe a clutch plate spring.
