Looking at how poorly that battery was manufactured, perhaps a 12v lawn mower battery was indeed installed.

I got one from Battery Central, Good people. It is the same battery that Jim's installs in his ford script batteries. I ended up not needing it so it is for sale. It is a D6V-38. AGM Battery 2,000 Max Amps, Cranking Amps @32 F 550, RC 55 min, AH 38. This fits inside the smaller Model A case. I paid $199.00 plus $25.00 shipping and will sell it for my cost. They have gone up since then.
This is not a lead acid battery.

This is a common misconception. If it is a truly an "AGM" battery, then it is, by definition, a lead-acid battery. It is just a different method of doing it, using fiberGlass Mats to Absorb the electrolyte.
