Oil filter education

I am using the stock flatty filter for the first time on my new engine. While cleaning it up I find only one very small hole in the inner tube about an inch from the top. Should there be more? I also have the restriction fitting at the canister inlet. These holes sure do seem to be small.

Look forward to the answers so I can move on.

The inlet hole size should be around .063 ( you can check it with drill bits if you have number size bits ). What size is the outlet hole? Should be somewhere in the double the inlet size (that is a guess!).

If that assumption is correct and my math is correct (a lot of need to be corrects here!) the outlet hole would be around .087

JSeery - the outlet on the bottom IS larger than the intake. I'm wondering about the tiny hole in the side of the tube in the middle of the canister. Thnx

That's the one I'm referring to, what size is the hole in the side of the standing tube in the center of the canister. Should be .063 or larger, I was guessing .087. It is possible it is the same size as the inlet restrictor, but you would think it would be larger. A lot of them have two holes that are .063 for double the area of the inlet restrictor. This photo is not mine!

I have two of the canisters, an older one with only one outlet hole about 2/3 of the way down and a newer one from an 8BA engine with two outlet holes as in the picture posted by JSeery. The two holer has the holes higher up on the outlet tube. All are the .063 size, I think.

Even the single hole MGG? That is interesting, it is not common to make an exit port the same size as the entry. If the early ones are the same size (entry/exit) it would appear it was decided that two exit holes was an improvement on the later ones.

Took some engineering, but I just put the finishing touches on installing the original filter on my 59A-B. Had to get a new fitting with the correct restriction as the threads on mine were toast. Found some aluminum spacers from McMaster-Carr to get the correct height above the finned aluminum heads and longer ARP bolts. I had to fabricate new lines and used a high-temp insulation sleeve for the return line where it was close to the exhaust manifold.


The next challenge will be torqueing that head bolt under the filter . . .

I did not actually measure the diameter of the single hole down in the canister but it appears about the same as the restrictor fitting hole in my 8BA canister inlet fitting. I did look the center tube up and down very carefully to make sure that the one hole was all it had. There was not a restrictor fitting on the inlet so I figured that the one outlet hole was the restriction. Next time I change oil I will try to get a good measurement on the one holer. I could not get the fitting off down on the block to see if it was restricted so to sleep better at night, I made one for the inlet fitting.

I know what you mean about oil line routing. I also made aluminum spacers and checked using my torque wrench/socket clearance. I will be using studs so it will be a little easier. I have the same exhaust manifold and hadn't thought about needing a heat leave. Have to route the exit line so as not to block torquing the nuts. Using a tube bending tool is always a fun challenge for me.

On an 8BA head setup (as you show) all the head torquing is usually done before any canister or oil line installation.
And if re-torquing, remove bolts holding the canister to the head and push/hold out of the way to get to head bolts.
And why the aluminum spacers as the 8BA setup does not use the head bolts to mount the canister?

I made the spacers to keep the filter stand off of the Edelbrock fins. I believe that I will be able to route the exit line so that I can re-torque at will. If I fail - --- step two, move the filter out of the way.

For the price of changing oil every 1,000 miles versus 3,000 miles, I do not have to fight with or look at that butt-ugly oil filter.

Ok - got the canister cleaned up and I do have 2 very clear small holes in the tube. Plumbing is done so now for some paint. Thanks to all of you for your help.
