Default 1950 Ford kingpin lock pin

I have to dismantle my kingpins to add shims to the thrust bearing and do not not know which way to drive out the lock pins.
How do I tell which way to drive them out?
The manual does not state any particular way, it just says drive them out.

Thanks Geoff

the lock pins are smaller on one end. They are tapered. You drive the lock pin out by hitting the small end of the lock pin to drive it out.

Thanks nickthebandit, I will try measuring them, they looked the same size at first glance.

Nick,

Of course you will need to remove the nut first, which should be on the front side of the kingpin. It should be obvious at that point.

Hit the nut side to drive them out the opposite end.

Thanks for the suggestion guys, but no nut on these lock pins, I don't think that they were produced new with them either.
Seems sensible to me that they should be held in place with a nut, but Ford knew better.

Chances are that the tapered pins were driven in from the front to the back so to remove drive from back to front. As mentioned, measure the pin diameters to confirm.

glennpm it appears that you are correct and I am fairly sure that the kingpins are the originals to the car. I have ben playing around with several sets of uprights and stub axles that I have and I have seen the results of the efforts of others that have worked on them.

I have had a change of plan as a result, I am going to leave the car as is and order a new set of kingpins from the USA.

The shipping, the dollar exchange rate and our governments 15% on top of the whole lot really hurts me, for the sake of a bit of end play but I do not want to end up with the car in bits and mangled parts that can not be put back together.

That's a good plan Geoff.

I redid my '40 king pins last summer and it was well worth it. I used a hand reamer with excellent results. Press one bushing at a time. On the first bushing, press the new one in, use the least worn old bushing as a guide to line up the reaming on the new one. Then do the second bushing using the one you reamed first, as a guide. I greased the "guide" bushing and lots of oil on the one I was reaming out. If you can get the bushings honed, better yet.

I put the reamer in a vice and pushed down and turned the spindle for the first bushing then flipped it to do the other.
