In a sedan, it's a steady rest (54-56); in a Tbird or a truck it is an engine mount.

in answer to the 6 cyl air cooled it was used till 63 i had one.64 had a c4.

On a 59 Galaxie, standard trans, I pulled the 292 and dropped in a 57 Merc 312. It was a perfect fit with no parts changes needed. The performance increase was significant.
