Default Unusual Stromberg 48

I saw a 48 carburetor today that appeared to have extra hardware on the main jets that would make them adjustable. ??? It came out of a garage where a stock car driver of the 1940's to 1970's lived. Just wondering if anyone has any background info about this.

Available at Speedway - See > https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Adjustable-Main-Jets-for-Stromberg-Style-Carbs,42285.html

If you are like us you really don't like pulling the carbs off to change jets over and over... These adjustable main jets will make life a little easier and get your car running right, a lot faster. Machined to high standards on Swiss screw machine. Part has a stainless steel needle and brass body and nut with Viton O-ring seal.
Simply remove your jet well plugs and screw in this adjustable jet assembly. Use the largest stock jet size for the richest mixture you need, then use the adjuster to lean it down from there. You can lean your mixture by turning clockwise or richen by turning counter clockwise. Includes Teflon sealing washer, extra O-ring seals & instructions.
  • Get your plug color just right
  • Compensate for altitude changes
  • Get the best tuneup your hot rod has ever had
Fits Stromberg 48, 81, and 97-style carburetors. Sold as a PAIR.

Vintage speed has adjustable main jets for Stromberg and Holley carbs. I would think that this is not a new idea and may have been an available as an aftermarket item in the day as well.

These adjustable jets can be a big pain in the backside as well. Messing around with adjustments from one side to the other and pulling spark plugs out and replacing until the cows come home. Unless you have a competition car and an exhaust gas tester then not worth the hassle and cost. Ask me how I know. I have a set in their packaging that date back to the 1940s which have a little T handle for the adjuster. Regards, Kevin.

I have quite a lot of Stromberg carburetors and parts. I have come across several different types of adjustable jets. I just put them aside and put my carburetors together with the parts that Ford supplied.

Might want to pick up an AF meter as well. A rich mixture can ruin the rings.
