Tom, Al, et al, have a great trip to LA and safe journey out and back. I saw a Rolling Bones post on facebook today saying they are also heading to the LA Roadster Show on Thursday morning. Are you all possibly planning to meet up with them at any time along the way?

Day 1 - started off at 6 AM and we met up with Al Casteen in his 36 cabriolet, and George in his 39 Ford convertible right on time in Farmville at 8:08. Al is from Smithfield and I am on the other side of the James River so we did not all start from the same location. We then cruised on into Roanoke area to meet up with Tom Richardson and a bunch of guys from the area At Mama's Cafe. Food was great but the company, priceless! These guys drive some really nice iron including 3-4 flathead powered cars so I was in High Cotton with my little flattie!

We then continued down the road but we were not without some hickups. George's car would conk out for no reason and after several attempts he found some deficient wiring. Once we got that squared away, we got rolling pretty good .....

Just before we stopped for the night we visited the Barillaro Speed Shop and these guys really treated us to a friendly greeting, warm hospitality, and some very nice builds they have going on. The beautiful grey roadster was an old hotrod that they resurrected and will be going to the LA Roadster Show as well. I love the color combo ..... The Riv is for the Bobby Alloway Shop as Barillaro is modifying the bumpers and doing some other mods ....

As always it's the friends you make that make this kind of trip all the more enjoyable and memorable .... off at 6AM tomorrow morning ....

More Barillaro pics ....

As for my hot rod, she ran great but after all the trouble I had finding straight rims I think I bent one today. I hit a rise in the road at 70 that I swear put us airborne for a sec. After that, I have a vibration that I guess I will have to live with for the duration of the trip. Never have I hit anything as bad as that .....

Day 2 - good day, no real problems save for a piece of fuel line I replaced between the mechanical fuel pump and my fuel regulator. The old line was cracked and probably would have made the day but I did not want to chance it.

Hotter today than it was yesterday - as for my flattie, yesterday she ran an average of 22-2400 rpm, from 65-70, 165 temp (+/- 5 degrees) - when you go up a grade, she gets a bit warmer, going down cooler. Engine ran strong the entire day considering the grades we were going up and down on.

Today we ran a bit harder early on - 170 degree temp +/- the 5 degrees, 23-2600 rpm and I did get her up to a pretty good clip at one point. She runs smoother at 2500 (2550 is 75) than 2300. As the day progressed we got pretty warm - mid 90s I would say. Going up grades I was almost touching 180 (I am running 180 thermos) but would quickly drop to 170 when the grade was completed. We then slowed up a bit and the pics of the gauges are from early on.

Initially when the car was built it had a .8 5th gear and 31" rear tires. After the accident the new T5 I bought has a .86 5th gear and I am now running 32" tires. Just that small bit of difference has made the car more responsive going up grades. At one point we were on a 5% grade and I was running at 2300 rpm. I gave it the gas and she easily pulled up to 2600 rpm and it would not do that before the latest combo. I added 1/2 qt of oil today and am at the initial 5 quart level. Again, pretty good I think and the car is surprising a lot of people, including me ....

Gas mileage was pretty good all things considered - 17.25 MPG today. I am very happy with that if you knew the amount of stuff/weight I have in the trunk ....

Day 3 - this is the third time I am writing this - sometimes I really do hate how this message function works. Anyway, long day today 630 miles - 11 hours. We started at 6:30 and finished at 4:30 after having gained an hour. We separated from Al, Shadow, George, and Randy as we wanted to beat the heat which we were somewhat successful in that it is almost 6:30 and they have not yet arrived ...

Car ran great with the vitals posted yesterday the same as today. Oil pressure was 48 lbs at speed, 20 lbs at hot idle. If you remember I had a problem with this engine losing oil pressure. We thought is was the oil pump but it turned out to be the pressure spring. I installed a 50lb unit at that time and it is still functioning well. However, idling is an issue and I think it is because of the difference of sea level. At home I am only 5' above sea level, here, and we always seems to be going upward, I know I am a lot more. I have raised the idle twice (small amounts) so it will idle to an extent but it will want to die out if I do not give it a little gas. I hope things go back to normal when in LA - if not, I will investigate further ....

I forgot to tell you about an accident I saw yesterday. This happy camper found out that an SUV towing a single axle travel trailer and towing a boat trailer behind it do not mix! It looked like the boat got out of control, whipped around, flipped the travel travel trailer upside down which destroyed it but still attached to the SUV appeared unharmed. No ambulances were about so I am thinking no one got hurt. How people can think they can do these things is beyond me ....

I did get a rock chip on my windshield today - I can't believe it took this long to happen. I have to call Grundy to see if I am covered for one of those guys that comes over and fixes rock chips like I have done on my DD ....

We have another 630 mile day tomorrow, ending up in Kingman, AZ. We hope to start at 5:30 to make it to Kingman by 4:30 .....

I'm riding along with you buddy. The New Jersey turnpike gave me my windshield rock chip and, oh by the way, ripped the left front shock mount half off, but that's another story. Enjoy the desert.

We almost bought the farm earlier today ourselves. Guy with a flatbed trailer had his steel wheelbarrow pop out of the trailer. Woman came to a screeching halt, missed it, but the big straight job truck could not stop in time. He wants to come in the center lane as he has no where else to go and is making his move and/but I was there. I just took a peek into the rear view and cut left to the speed lane. Thank God no one was there and the woman who made the hard stop accelerated in front of the truck and came to where I was in the center - like syncopated movements. Close call but it all worked out ....

Good morning Tom. Should be a warm week end when you arrive at Pomona. News says high 80's to 90. Sounds like you are making good time. Not sure if I could make a trip that long. My roadster still rides a little like an old buck board but I like it. Have a safe remainder of the trip. Hope to run in to you there. Not sure if I will be driving mine or my truck. Swap meet vehicle. Mark.

Hi Everyone, Tom and Earl, I'm squeezed in the back somewhere between some of these supplies, enjoying the signs going by!

Here's a shot of the type of look I know you guys are doing all day long. This is on the 2013 Fall Barner's Tour arranged by TrainGuy. These two car guys have just come back from an early morning blast around the neighboorhood in Phil's 32 hotrod.

Make some more great memories, I'll claim them as being mine when you aren't looking!

Day 4 - sorry I did not post yesterday. It was a really long day and the wind was even more fierce across New Mexico and Arizona. My shoulders were killing me by the end of the day as I was holding onto the steering wheel with both hands all day long. I was not alone however, as the big rigs were having just as much if not more trouble. But, during this long day we picked up two more to cruise into Pomona with - Larry in his 32 roadster and Rick driving Larry's 30s banger roadster. The long day also ended up on a really excellent note however, as there were about 15 Kingman, AZ hot rodders there to greet us at the local hot rod cafe. We had a blast meeting them, swapping lies - it was just a great time that ended all too quickly. Thanks for a great time .....
