i thought it might be interesting to discuss what determined how we named our cars.

My Model A, Emma, is named after both of my wives grandmothers, and they both had the same middle name.... Elizabeth.

Back in the (dark) ages, I built a (4) computer network system for my Wife's classroom at school for the students to use. When she found out that the various computer "names" were old girlfriends, she wasn't very pleased with that.

Therefore, my Model A remains un-named.

I named mine Norah D when I purchased her but my boys and family all call her old Stanley. They got the name from the movie "Cars". The car named Stanley in the movie is actually a Model T but they don't care so Stanley it is. And sometimes Norah D.

I do not name my Model A's, per se, however my 1931 AA was purchased from the Kirby Company of Fairbanks, Electric Vaccum (SP) Sweepers since 1906.

Vacuum was actually misspelled on the lettering on both doors and I painted over the whole mess.

It is known locally as the Kirby truck.

My wife named my/our '30 roadster...The Ugly Duck...I just call her the Duck! She warned me NOT to drive this A, until it was 'finished'. She knew/stated that if I started to drive it, that IT would never be finished and become a 'beautiful swan' ! Ha, when it fired first time, she was right !
I'm a 'driver' who tried the restorer thing and know a bit about chassis/drive train. But, having had pretty, and not caring about pretty, the Duck will stay !! She is fun to run/work with as grease/dirt/nicks don't matter a whit

BTW...SHE only ever rode in the Duck one time. And , that was to go to a nearby swap meet at a nearby Boys Home. Jay Leno pulled up next to me , while we were going to park and smiling..said 'nice ride'. He was in his latest acquisition..dark green Duesy !
I thot that that would impress HER, so that she would like Duck to be Swan....nope !!!

My first A was a vagabond green 29 tudor. She told me her name was Belle. Seemed to fit and that was her name until the day she left our garage.
The pickup truck mumbles something occasionally but I haven't made out what he's saying. My granddaughter refers to it as Papa's Tickup Truck.

Named my Ms. Daisy... I guess when I looked at the car, I got a sense of very older Lady and the film "Driving Ms. Daisy" came to mind to I when with it...

Mitch, sorry to read of your late Father's Model A. I'm sure he's very happy at your work on Model A's. At some point the car that was your Father's will find a new home and I hope it is with you...

We named our roadster Mae. Seemed to make sense, Mae, the model A.

After a while we realized we really needed a closed car for when it got colder, and I thought maybe she would let me have another one, so maybe became Bea, when we got our Town Sedan.

We considered a pickup as well, but found a late model (1951) that is probably more practical. It was known all over the town I bought it in, as the Red Truck, It will remain the Red Truck.

"Chester", my car had fairly blinding orange wheels when I bought it, rose beige car with no pinstripe, made me think of Cheetos. And their mascot is Chester cheetah, and I think the name Chester is a name you don't hear often with kids now days. Now all that's left is the Orange pinstripe, enjoying the black wheels =]

In recent years, I have taken to calling my standard black Tudor "Miss Annie"...mostly as it reminds me of a prim and proper conservative old lady and the name starts with "A"...... and I thought it just ought to have a name starting with the letter "A". It was not a family car, as my family had all passed away before I acquired the car, so there was nothing sentimental there.
There was a lady at my church back in the fifties named Annie, an old maid schoolteacher who wore a black flat brim hat, high top lace-up shoes and a black dress.

Named her Nancy after the former owner's wife who refused to go near the car for 20 years he owned it. Our '25 Ford was missing a headlight, so we named her Betty Ford.

Minerva was named for Minerva Silkwood, one of Pat's FARAWAY relatives, in Lincoln County, Illinois. In Roman Mythology, Minerva was the Godess of WISDOM & WAR!
Vermin was one of the names I could "make up" from extra, left over letters from M-I-N-E-R-V-A! Also because Buster T. is a RAT TERRIER & is a natural born RODENT & SNAKE killer!
When I buy me a Hot Rod, it'll be named, RATT-GASS! My Truck is KADOTA & my Scooter is just, RAT!
My name is MUDD W.

I named my 29 Phaeton Flora -Now the reason is probably is going to take a bit of explaining and hopefully won't offend to many . Flora was a well known New Zealand Madam in the 1950's-60's (before I was born!) and in the Queens English a brothel is colloquially known as a 'Knocking Shop" The 29 had lots of rod knock . Seeing she was doing so much knocking I called her Flora

The 1931 is named "Patrick" for its previous owner Patrick Hilton of Marrietta, GA who passed and his wife sold the car. Never met Patrick but somehow his name belongs on this car.

My wife named the 1930 restoration car "Duke" for our late friend Major Duke Fullerton who survived the Bataan Death march and so much more as a POW. May he rest in Peace.

42 Tudor - Eleanor, just seemed to fit
42 Jeep - Sarge, from the movie Cars
43 WLA - Indie, after Indiana Jones
89 TC - Redwing, by her previous owner, my step-mother, no idea why

My 31 pick up (now in transition to become a Huckster) was named by the previous owner when he was about 14. "Walter" I'm told just fit the truck and it's personality. Walter is a member of my family and all know who he is.

Chief, my Dad, only, ever, named 1 of his cars, "HEZZIE", a NEW '52 Chev. P.U. "Maybe" after Hezzie, the Kazoo player in the Spike Jones Band?? Cindy, my Daughter, thinks car names are DUMB! She calls me, ECCENTRIC, & the Dog agrees.

This is, of course, Thelma. Named after my great aunt Thelma and my mother (her middle name was Thelma).

When I purchased my 1928 Leatherback it came with all the paperwork that had accumulated over the last 60 years or so. In amongst this I found that the guy who owned it for 50 years up until till he passed away 10 years ago refered to it as "the Aristocrat". Has anyone heard a Model A referred to as this before? I was curious if this was a name he thought up or just a general term for a Model A.

From the beginning of my project I dubbed it "Buntline Special". The name is written in gold just above the side hinge of the hood.

My little blue coupe is "Moonpie". It seems to fit her.

My granddad carried Moonpies in his dinner bucket to the coal mines everyday.

I named this one sweet Caroline after the Neil Diamond song. The words seemed to fit , Sweet Caroline ... good times never seemed so good...Who'd have believed you'd come around. I had wanted a roadster like her since I was in my teens. I had just about given up on finding one that I could afford. Thanks to Mark Sullivan and eBay it happened. She was rough when I got her and nobody else wanted her . With a lot of work and a generous sprinkling of the green stuff it finally came to pass !!!!!!!Here she is with my grand daughter sitting in her.

Here is a 29 strip down model A that I've had since I was 13 years old . I'm explaining the controlls to my grand daughter Bailey here just before I let her drive it for the first time. The motor number indicates that its a september 29. I can't find a frame date but all of the parts look purdy much correct for that date of car. Its still got all of the running gear and engine that came with it when I got it in the spring of 1960. I just named it my september 29.

Yo Brother, Cali-phone-ya is a long ways to drive the truck with no windows . Like an old saying , Cali-phone-Ya would be like slam to hale and plum nilly from here if I had to drive that one. It would be a shame to put a chev-ah-lay motor in it after all these years. It ain't got a numbers matching motor but the motor thats in it has been there since I bought it from Cap Hudson in 1967 for thirty dollars. When I got it it didn't have the custom body , it was jist a strip down and me and Deb pulled it home with a chain. I spect I better jist keep it. Yer brother Purdy.

They even wrote a song about it (Henry's Made a Lady out of Lizzie):

You can listen to it here:

Our Model A pickup is Blackie, in keeping with other vehicles named Brownie, Red, Silver, Old Blue and Otto (how'd he get in there?).

"Annie" - our '30 Deluxe Coupe is named after the original owner Mrs. Annie L. Bayless.

Annie just turned 65,000 original miles while rolling around the back roads of Northern California's wine country last week.

Had cars ive built through the years but never named them. My sister called my 63 nova Baby Nova but i never did. My 23 T Bucket project I named the Plastic Bi_ch only because it doesnt want to live. My wife thinks im crazy saying these cars have a personality but shes never built a car if you have you know what i mean. These cars are special so I named my 29 Susie after my Grandmother, and the 30 is named Lucy after my Mom.

This one rode on tires with flat spots causing it to "hop." Consequently it was called "Chester", "Kermit", and finally dubbed The Lithotripter by a friend who bounced 60 miles in my rumble seat.

My Coupe's name is "It," a name my wife gave to it over 50 years ago. Since then "It" has had a few other temporary names such as "You #$@^%," and some others not fit for this forum.

My 190A will keep its original name, "Victoria" because it is the name of my grand daughter, and because the name "Vickie" as it applies to the 190A bothers me. "Victoria" is a very important name in history, and it is even the name of an era. So I will not besmirch history and keep the name "Victoria."

'28 Sport Coupe...we call her Ethyl. A day or two after bringing her home, my wife asked what we were going to call her....later that day, I happened to see a headstone in Arlington Nat'l Cemetery with the name Ethyl Graycar. I mentioned it to the wife, and the name sort of stuck.

Years ago with a back seat full of grandchildren, we said our Model A that was already female it seems, should have a name. Grandson Josh felt she was an Ol Jenny, and that became who she was. Now with nice local county YOM plates, I can only admire them as extra because I would be severely disciplined by all our family if I removed Ol Jenny's personalized plates. We found OL Jenny in 1963, so I guess she does have family seniority rights.

Great name, BETSY! Also the name of our OOOLD family squirrel gun, a single shot, bolt action, Remington Model 41 Targetmaster.
My Son, Gregg also, (RIP) said it was a primo target shooting gun. Gregg also did competition shooting with a .44 MAGNUM!

The only car in my history that had a name was a 36 Chevy 4 door that my brother and I bought while in high school in the 50's. Paid $35 for it and had to borrow money from the bank to pay it off. Tried to borrow the money on our own, but had to get our stepfather to sign for it. Classmates dubbed the car, The Crime Car, after the gangster movies that always had guys riding on running boards.

I'm getting in on this a little late, but my coupe was called the Bumble Bee because when I bought it the paint was a GM yellow and Honda Black that made it look like a bee. It is now painted Chicle/Copra Drab, so no more Bumble Bee. Mostly just call it "the A" now.

Add "Fay" -- after my cousin/land-lady. She is also a 1930 model . . .

The names for my vehicles are more generic, i.e. "The A" or "Town Sedan" (Altho my wife refers to the Town Sedan as "Your Girl"). Then we have the "Grocery Getter" or "The 55", My wife's "FLEX" or my "Truck". Then lastly there's my grandson's Taurus "The Bull".

Our 30 Town Sedan is named Priscilla, after Priscilla Mullen, a little girl on the Mayflower who took quite an interest in John Alden, a cooper on the Mayflower. They later married and had 10 children. I am a descendent of John & Priscilla , so our old girl is Priscilla.

"Vernon" is the name of my mostly original 1930 Model A Ford Coupe DeLuxe named for the original owner.
"Rosie" is the name of my 1929 Model A Ford Tudor Sedan.

My 1929 cabriolet was called "Bessie" when my grandmother had it from 1930 to 1954. When I got it a few years after she died, my mother did not like the name because it was her name. So the car lost its original name and has remained nameless for all these 50 plus years. Once it is back on the road in a few months, if I get the urge to name her, it will be "Bessie," in memory of both my mom and grandmother. I have already given her a gender in my mind, something I have not done to a car before now. I have never given any of my cars people-type names, but this may be a first.

Nancy ---- for the former owner's wife who never liked the car and rode in her once.

Actually, since our tribe does not practice the ritual of "car naming" none have been chosen for any vehicle. Was however thinking of providing a moniker for the 1931 Tudor which was bought by the previous owner from a guy on Manhattan Island, New York City decades ago.

As the story goes, back in the day, this Model A Ford car was chased through Times Square and down Broadway a few blocks by the monster primate "King Kong". The name that came with this car was in fact . . . "Fay Wray". She was the screaming blond babe who was driving this actual car when pursued by the big ape through Manhattan streets in 1933.

" Fay Wray" . . . Kinda has a ring to it!

Fay Wray

When I restored my 31 coupe some 30 plus years ago, my oldest Grandson would always go with me to some of the car shows. He would always refer to the "A" as precious, he is 30 and married now.
Consequently it will be his when I am gone. My 31 S/W was called Deen , by my youngest Grandson it was green in color but he couldn’t say green, he is 21 now. Same with this car it will be his when I am gone.

I call the 29 Tudor "The Gerald A" after my dad, That was his name(no middle name just the letter A).
I affectionately call the son's Subaru Outback "The Rice Burner", Which is just a Detroit area thing, Unfortunately!

My 31 Roadster's name is Milly. When I got it it had a California plate with the letters MILLY. Another Model A, my dad's car which I have owned since 1986 is called Julito, It was built in July 1928 (Julito is small Julio which is Spanish for July. My 31 Roadster pickup is called Willy after my father in Law who loved pickups.

I wonder if there are any women here? Looks like girls do not give names to their drives.. On the other hand, we are less likely to drive old ones. I'm lucky to steal the old pickup from my husband, just for fun. And nowadays cars don't have that much of a personality imo...

Our 31 wide bed needs paint thus is named "Chip". The 30 roadster could use a new top, nickname "Raggedy Annie". The Vicki is named "Miss Daisy" but lately she has been somewhat cantankerous so she has been referred to as "Christine".

I have 3 Model As named as follows:
1931 tudor named Smitty after the man I purchased it from.
1930 Fordor named the Green Machine as per its color.

1930 Town-sedan named Caliche. Caliche is a gravel like road foundation material which is a light tan color and very dusty. I found this car in a shed which had open ends. It was stored there for numerous years and completely covered by caliche dust-even the fenders were tan. Hence I named it Caliche. I did a frame up restoration of it and you can see it in my avatar.

Back when I was spending every weekend working on the Truck, my wife referred to it as "the other lady". Ed Williamson

I named my first two modern cars - one used and one new. For some reason, never named any other cars, including Model A - just refer to them by make, model, body style and/or color

My grandson sorta named mine Clara,as in Henry's Lady.I didn't have the heart or want to disappoint him by saying that could also be Evangeline so Clara it is.probably not very original. I just sold a '32 Plymouth to buy the Model A aand my grandson would never come up for a name for it.He said he was afraid if he named it I would keep it but he named my '31 roadster the day I got it.

My daughter has named most of the cars we've given names, but insists on not naming some of them:

1926 T - Bessie (named by my father)
1929 A Roadster - The Roadster
1930 AA - The big truck
1930 Pickup - The Pickup
1930 Town Sedan - Ruby (named for the red stones in the eyebrows)
1931 Woody - Woody (what else)
1942 Tudor Sedan - Eleanor (Mrs. FDR)
1942 MB Jeep - Peaches (my mother's nickname during the war years)
1943 HD WLA - Queenie (cause she's a hanger queen)

I had a great little dog. Woofa. Loyal, courageous, funny and very very popular. We neither have animals in the house nor are they permitted to ride in motor cars, with one exception. The Model A and strictly provided Woofa sit on the floor. Well Woofa was always at my heals when I was anywhere near the A for fear of missing a ride.
Woofa was skittled just over a year ago and we live on a street with very little traffic. Chasing a visitors dog. I still get a bit teary when I think of Woofa. I named the ute (pickup) in memory of my little friend. At this moment I have a adhesive sign being made to stick on the bonnet. "woofa.express".
And that's how my ute got its name. The offending vehicle was a Nissan and I have never liked Nissans since.

Bought a 29 roadster that had belonged to Allen Funt of Candid Camera Fame. Was told I could use the license plate, "SMILE29", then told "No, they may want to put the plates on another 29. So I got 29SMILE on it and hung the other plates onto the rafters in my garage. Good luck on using them on another 29. Anyway all my friends just started calling the car as Smile. Acquired "Vermin" from a friend of Bill Williamson. It has the name under the right tail light so it will just stay with the car as it is currently for sale. I like the name. His son put some rice on the seat and told Bill, "Dad, we got white mice. Like that bit also.

I think that is how its spelled, I try not to look. Its pinstriped on the bottom door jam from the previous owner. Do the names have to stay with the car?

I took a similar tack, I figured that the Model A was Edsel's baby, so mine is named Josephine after his daughter.

As a side note, my father, who is a clock repairman, got to know her when he did some work for her many years ago.

"Peanut" came with about five, 5 gallon buckets of peanuts under & behind the seat of my 28 roadster pickup & one tired mouse. He didn't get to shell most of them before being evicted along with his pantry.

I bought a 1937 Ford coupe 14 years ago and the family of the estate said I had to keep the name Stella on it . Stella Miller of Danville Ohio bought the car new in 1937 and was a school teacher who walked to her job.As far as I know it was the only car she ever owned.Still only has 24,000 actual on it but not the 60hp.

I've been professionally working on cars my whole adult life and cut my teeth on the horn button of my dad's (my) Model T...
It has always puzzled me why folks name their cars.
I recently had a customer referred to me with a 76 AMC Pacer...
She named it after the old lady she bought it from, the name escapes me now...
To each their own...SMH

Why I Named my Vehicles.

In my business I had a number of vehicles including 5 custom fitted trucks specifically for loading aeroplanes. Four were Mercedes 1418’s, they were affordable when I wasn’t flush plus economical to run and were almost indestructible.
Those trucks and all other vehicles were numbered. Myself and drivers could never recall the numbers off the top of our head so I gave them names, some after the previous owners. They were Scrooge, Spuds, Chick e babe, Wahine, pronounced wa he ne and Freddy. Then we had no more difficulty in identifying trucks.
The aeroplanes had 5 rego letters and were referred to by the last 3 letters of that rego.
So that is why I named my vehicles.
I guess after that it simply became habit to name vehicles. My A’s are Woofa.Express, Staff Car, Old Chocolate, and the General Motors Holden is simply The FX from which all that model is known.

The pictures are Scrooge, 1 loading rice and 2, folded for travel.

have not named too many of my cars, but when the Model A was behaving I would call it "Pussycat".
when it misbehaved I called it "the antiChrist".

once had a 62 Falcon we called the Maltese Falcon and a 64 Rambler called the Midnight Rambler.

first car was a 59 Impala, painted cameo coral so I sometimes called it the Pink Panther

My '29 "Sport" roadster is named the Clown Car. Because once, some years ago a Model-A purist here on the ..'Barn. Said that is what the car would look like after I added all the accessories that I wanted to put on it. I had not thought of a name until then. I thanked him for helping me name the car. He never responded!

My '31 deluxe roadster is called Virginia. The car was assembled in Norfolk, VA, in 1931. I purchased the car in Virginia, my dad was born in Virginia and my mother's name was Virginia.... so.....

I call my '30 Town Sedan " George" for my good friend who owned it for many, many years. George and his college buddy landed a job one summer in the fifties on the Alaska Railroad and drove the car from Indiana to Alaska and back. They had major engine problems at one point along the way so George stayed with the car for two weeks while his buddy hitch hiked to Dawson, I believe it was, to order parts from the lower 48. They rigged a piece of plywood from on top of the rear seat back to the dash and one slept there while the other drove. The rest of the car, inside and out was stacked high with tires, parts, tools, luggage, food, fuel, etc. RIP George.

Me being a rebel without a cause said I would have none of that and named her Sweet Pee. All my friends, neighbors and people about town ask me how sweet Pee is doing. What can i say.

I bought "Vermin" from my pal down in Fresno. Didn't notice the name somehow until the seller, actually we traded, delivered it. The we both had a good laugh and I called to tell the owner Vermin had a good home. Now he lives in Australia in another good home. Many a good laugh for all of us from our pal Bill Williamson down there in Fresno. Need to get by and see the boy in person. I just don't travel there anymore and he doesn't get out much either, so we have never met. Vermin had a plate on the opposite side from the license with his name, "VERMIN' just like a license plate. That stayed with the car.

Naming Vehicles.

I had 5 trucks to load my cropduster aeroplanes, they all had a number. No one could remember which was which including myself. So I gave them all names. There was Chick e Babe, Spuds, Wharfie, Freddy and Scrooge. That stopped all confusion.
My roadster ute I named “Woofa.Express” after a dog I had with 100% character and personality. He was not permitted in house or car with the exception of the ute and Woofa concidered this his birth right. Woofa was skittled chasing another dog and I’m still grieving 3 year later. So in his honour I named this vehicle Woofa.Express. My tourer is “Desert Sands light” and resembles what we all would call “Olive” thus the name Olive. My dog “Fugs” is to have the Roadster Coupe named after him “Fugs Limo”. My FX Holden is to go to my daughter Sarah. (each of my kids has been promised a vintage). Sarah was born in ’74, (the year cattle prices collapsed). Because neither my wife and my self could agree on a name the two finalist names were put in a hat and Sarah’s name was drawn. But in the interim, because she was born on Bastille day she was called Fifi. Now at 46 she is still Fifi. So the FX Holden is named “Fifi’s Carriage”.

As a footnote, our kids are nick named Mushy, Moo, Fifi and Turtle. My friend Johnny tells me Turtle was an unfortunate pick because that’s what a girl is called; one who gets on her back and can’t get back on her feet so easily.
