Re: Mecury Crank Cup Plug Install Question
Not sure what 'cleanest" means, but the most common manner is to knock the soft plugs in so that the edges are just below the outside of the rod throw, then put a few punch 'dimples' around the parameter - such that they are not "blown out" by the oil pressure. This is the same procedure that is used when you put in the 1/2" soft plugs on the front of a SBC block - for the oil galleys. On more race oriented builds, we tap the throws for threaded plugs (and the galleys on a SBC). This should be done before the balancing operation is done. Make sense?

A loose fitting steel rod that has a spherical end. (and wash you hands and possibly antiseptic rubber gloves? )

Sorry for the contiversy in using the word “cleanest”- I installed one as I normally knock expansion plugs in- looks a little rough around the edges for my liking...”dirty” if you will. I was looking for “I normally use ...to tap them, in just below the surface then stake.” Like a round length of steel rod. Thanks again, I will go back into my cave now. |
