8cm to 39 trans questions
Hi All:
I am about to swap my tired 59a for an 8cm that I have put together, with early front dress (cam/ cover/ water pumps/ pulley/ crab/ etc.) I have the truck bellhousing for the later motor also. This will be going in my 34 5 window. I will be running my existing 39 trans- couple of questions: I know I can get the clutch kit from Fort Wayne to adapt early clutch stuff to the later flywheel- I have the Merc flywheel that came w/ my core 8cm, can I run that? Is there a better flywheel that I should consider? Also, any other "heads up" information that will prepare me in advance?? Thank You! Dave |

Re: 8cm to 39 trans questions

Dave....Just to be clear, you must run a '49-'53 flywheel. No early flywheels will work correctly, as the flywheel ring gear will not be in the correct location, fore/aft. Coop . |

Re: 8cm to 39 trans questions
Thx guys- I do not have a clutch assembly for the 8cm currently. I was going to order the kit from Ft Wayne that has the p plate and disk the will bolt to the later flywheel with correct splines for 39 transmission.

Re: 8cm to 39 trans questions
The 49 thru early 51 8CM used the Borg & Beck 10-inch clutch set up for 1 3/8" input spline just like the early Ford light duty top shift trans. It's a good clutch but harder to find than most. The flywheel may work with a mid 80s GM diaphragm clutch if modified to work with the old Ford throw out bearing. Centerforce sells one like this. A clutch rebuilder could likely set up a diaphragm type as long as they are familiar with the application.
