King pin removal, the hard way!

So I picked up a late 30’s front axle with round back spindles. Wishbones had been cut/welded and are pretty much junk, but the axle(I have about 10 of these) and the spindles are in good shape.
One of the kingpins was about 1/2 way out, I thought it would be the “easy” side.
Boy was I wrong, it wouldn’t budge, even with heat and an air hammer. So I backed it up a bit and cut the end off, and my suspicions were correct. The diameter of the pin was .813, and there was no way the thing was going through the axle after it had been mushroomed out to a whopping .836 diameter!

Several years ago, after spending all day getting the spindles off of 5 axle assemblies, and beating up my hands, wrists, and arms, I felt there must be an easier way. The next axle assemblies that I needed to dis-assemble, I took them to Super Spring shop. They specialize in big truck work. They charged me $ 20.00 to dis-assemble a complete front end. It is well worth the price. It saves time energy and abuse of my body.

Well I haven’t even attempted the perch pins yet. I thought I would try making a “puller” of some sort for those like Andy did here on the Barn.
But I can tell you, if I found someone to do all this for $20, I’d bring them a truckload of them!

the civilized way is to use a big press. hammers and air hammers just wreck stuff. you get very creative when setting the whole axle and wish bone in the bed of the press to get it sitting level and secure, takes two people really. blocks and boards, what ever it takes. i have a big piece of heavy wall pipe cut and ground to the right angle to support the axle and keep the king pins or perch pins vertical for pressing.

looks like it would bolt onto the 4 backing plate holes on the spindle and has a fine thread screw to press out the king pin. great idea, could be done on the car then

That's exactly how this works. It's a vintage K R Wilson tool, specifically designed for Ford passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

I've used another I have NUMEROUS times and do not recall having an issue with any removals.
Prior to having this tool, I do recall some swearing going on, sore hands and wrists...

The king pin tool in your photo appears to be for BIG trucks. Not a huge desire for that tool.
Still, $250 for the set was a deal even eight years ago.

Haha. I noticed I was on that post as well.

My dad has Snap On king pin remover that has not failed us yet. Hook it up to a 1/2” impact and seconds later they are out.
