Default 8BA Flywheel Presure plate and clutch

I have the FW, PP and Clutch disc that came out of the 52 Ford with OD . It was not running when I got it. I am a believer in not replacing things unless they need to be replaced. How can you tell if the pressure plate is good? The clutch I will replace. What about the throw out bearing, the flywheel surface. Just looking for opinions, especially since these parts are a pain to replace later.

How many miles are on this set up? To your point, it is an absolute pain to replace these parts once everything is back together. As much as I appreciate you not wanting to be a parts replacer, changing a throw out bearing is a bear of a job.

If there are some miles on this set up, I would think it is wise to replace the throw out bearing and have the PP and flywheel clean up/resurfaced by a machine shop while you have easy access to it.

I already check yelp for a transmission shop. It's been years since I went to one. One that has good reviews has been around over 40 years. Now to keep from getting gouged on price. Typical cost (then double for CA)

When I had my service shop back in the 80's, I would insist upon replacing the bearing, disc and plate as part of the clutch service. The few (very few) folks that told me "no, just replace..." quickly came to regret that decision as I was soon thereafter going back to replace all of the pieces.

Kube's advice is what I would follow.

If you don't want to, why not just take the parts to a machine shop since the pressure plate and flywheel will need to be fly cut to true them up? I would think it is a couple hundred dollar job at the most.

In the end, you need to factor what your time worth. Taking this all apart again is a lot of time. Do it right the first time and be done with it.

I think it’s worth what it costs......it’s a lot of work to take that all apart again....Mark

It all depends. If you're young strong, flexible, and broke, run 'em if they seem to be good. If you're old, weak, stiff, and financially comfortable, do it right the first time.

I used to do things without a second thought that I wouldn't even consider these days.

Although we have some younger members, unfortunately most of us fall in the second category above.

Young, weak, stiff, just had a cortisone shot in the right shoulder less than a week ago, Financially OK. The two go to transmission places gave me the name of the "Friction" shop. It is actually the same business I remember from 40 years ago and still do the same work but the new name doesn't give a clue.

Just be sure you aren't replacing old well made parts with new questionable parts. New, by itself, doesn't really mean that much.
