1940 Heater Color
Is there any off the shelf colour that is close to the original for a 1940 Heater?
The V8 Times had an excellent article in the Jan/Feb 1990 issue where they describe the color as: "heather gray pastel" color with 3 red handbrushed stripes. They continue on to say 1940 Ford (Eaton) heater gray has been formulated in R & M enamel, Super-Max line. R & M dealers can mix quantities from the following formula: TE 01-100, TE 94-514, TE 41-815, TE 74-900, TE 78-950, TE 85-965, TE 66-975, TE 10-1000 I'll admit i've never seen a paint code like that before, and I don't know how you would get it made. So is there an off the shelf color out there that everyone uses? Kirk

Re: 1940 Heater Color
Dale, Tom Cherry passed away many years ago and his son only did the heater buisness a few years. I have a partial can of RM Eaton Gray I got from Tom Cherry. I think I have pictures of the can in my MISC folder when someone else asked me about 40 heater color. I have 2 40s (used to have 4) and I won't be doing any more 40s. Might get a different formula off this can.
Larry Caplin remade the switch knob but after the last run sold out, isn't making any more. See you at Portland! |

I'd guess that Tom Cherry II must have passed away about 1995. It's not at all surprising that this gentleman is still fondly remembered, ...and can someone please confirm that his donated heater collection is still on display at the Foundation?

Re: 1940 Heater Color
Rockfla, Larry told me the thin brass inner part the plastic goes on, got to be cost prohibitive to have made. Larry is on this forum and can explain the whole process if you PM him. I am pretty sure he is 40Larry on here.

Re: 1940 Heater Color
I was wondering if Tom Cherry Jr. was still with us. His articles in the V8 times on these heaters were excellent, but of course they were written 34 years ago. Its the only information i've found that notes the difference between the car and pickup heaters.

Re: 1940 Heater Color
Kirk, I believe you are correct in his suffix having been Jr. , and his son known as Tom Cherry III. I believe Tom Jr left us about 1995..
