Re: pinstripe masking-tape length
Any good pinstriper will do it freehand, no masking tape used. If you're going to mask it off and paint a stripe then approx double the length of the stripe ( top and bottom ) measure the length of your planned stripe.

Re: pinstripe masking-tape length
My hand isn't steady enough to do stripes with a brush so I buy the best quality 3M tapes that I can get to lay them out. A person can do a tape of the correct width as the marker tape and then butt the masking right up to the edge of the marker. When all the asking is applied, the marker can be pulled off just before applying the paint.
I always buy fresh new rolls of tape to lay out stripes and I get twice as much as I think I need to do the job. I always leave the edge tapes where I can peel them off without messing with the masking paper or plastic. That way I can peel the tape off the edge of the stripe while it's still wet. This allows it to flow a bit before it dries. It looks more natural that way. I pull the rest of the masking off after it's all dry. |

Re: pinstripe masking-tape length
I used 3M Fine line tape 1/16” wide. Airbrushed the light blue applied the tape( it’s very easy to bend around tight radius curves). Then sprayed the Lombardi blue. Remove the tape and then clear coat. The stripe is buried deep under the clear coat. I never saw this done before but I’m sure it’s not first time painters have used this technique.

Re: pinstripe masking-tape length
Here’s a freehand stripe done by a local artist. Young person who’s very talented.
I didn’t want the freehand non stock striping on the car itself but thought the rear end could use a nice “ tramp stamp” or AKA some ink….. |
