Default How to set windshield glass in a 37 sedan??

I bought all my glass from Sanders. How do I use the setting tape to put in the new glass in. I see there are two different sizes. Not sure what size fits though. I am not a math wizz. I have a 11/32" channel opening. The glass is of coarse 1/4". Now I can get two different sizes of tape. Either 3/64", or 1/16" Anyone know where I could go online to learn how to set these two pieces of glass?? Thanks

If the channel is 11/32, and the glass is 1/4" (8/32), then the amount to be filled is 3/32. As the tape must fit on both sides of the glass, that would be 6/64 total. Thus the 3/64 tape would be correct when folded over the edge of the glass.

Okay. I found it. Only problem is that it looks like in 1940 they are using a rubber seal. For 1937 I have to use a setting tape. For 1940 it looks like the windshield is fixed. For my 37 it is out of the car. The glass shops in my area will not do the work unless I buy the glass from them first. I bought my glass from Sanders. That is why I wold like to know how to do this from someone who has done it before.

Look on this thread on Page 5, Post # 93. I changed the windshield on my 1937 Ford. I am not on my own computer so I can't give you more advice on this presently. Later I can help a little more.

I wrapped the setting tap around the glass, using pie cuts to navigate the curves. The setting tape was held in place by using ordinary electrical tape. The glass was gently installed into the lower windshield frame. The top of the frame was put in place. Don't use a lot of force. Once the frame is in place, the excess setting tape is cut off. The photos in the thread link (page 5 / post # 93) tell the story. Good luck. PM me if you need help.

Be careful of the center bar to much pressure will break it loose when installing the glass and tape. Zeke

Lubricate the tape when getting it to slide into the windshield frame with glass cleaner. DO NOT use WD40 per the guy who sold me the glass and setting tape for my '39 p/u.

Would something like the teaspoon of liquid soap mixed into a quart of water work?? That is what I used years ago to put that tint on windows.
Also. Those channels that hold the rear windows had some kind of gasket in them. Is this something I can find out there?? I have the cats whiskers for the windows, but the car was completly gutted when I bought it so it has been pretty much ask questions from people.

Been trying to find them on there, but they seemed to be for newer cars.

Is there a difference between the Standard, and the Deluxe when it comes to the window glass?? I got rubber rear window seals for Steele Rubber Parts. I tried it on one of my rears, and it seems to be off by 1/2". I was told by someone to just cut it and fit it to the glass then install it.. Is that right??

The ones I saw still showed the technics, even though they were on newer vehicles.

I have the tape coming. Maybe next weekend. Have to work this weekend.
As far as putting in the rear sides goes. My area is a little larger than normal. The will remain up.

You should have received P/N 20-2261-81 from Steele. It is the same as the 40 Ford Coupe seal. If yours is 1/2" larger, you probably received the P/N 20-7379-81 Seal for the 39-40 Sedan. I had the same problem when I ordered from Dennis Carpenter. Steele makes all of Carpenter's rubber now. I haven't heard of this problem with rubber from Drake.

I also have a set from Vintique, and they are way off. Vintique told me they get their seals from Drake.

The seal for my '39 p/u came from Joe's and its a Vintigue. Fit ok once I got it seated in the windshield frame. Kept the windshield closed for a week or so to allow it to seat in and all is well. I aligned the end of the glass setting tape with the ends of the windshield frame. It was a pita to get everything set correctly and in the one area where the tape didn't seal 100% I used some black silicone and you don't notice it at all.
