Re: ford 47 pickup starter alignment problem
there are no shims, make sure you have the small bracket that bolts to one of the starter bolts to the oil pan, make sure you have a 59AB flywheel and not an 8BA flywheel

What alignment issues are you having? A flathead doesn't use shims like a SBC would. They shouldn't be required. |

Re: ford 47 pickup starter alignment problem
It is an "L"-shaped bracket about 1 1/2" long on one side and about 1" on the other and about 1/2" wide. One end bolts under the head of one of the long starter mounting bolts and the other under an oil pan bolt. Back in the day, a lot of them were left out when work was done on the starter. I think I may have a spare or two if you have trouble finding one.

Re: ford 47 pickup starter alignment problem
.
This is the bracket that "tubman" speaks of. You can see the difference in flywheels below. The six pressure plate bolt holes are NOT drilled all the way through on the '48 and earlier (59A) wheels. The spacing difference is obvious. DD . |

Re: ford 47 pickup starter alignment problem
Thank you for the tip on the small bracket. My truck did not have the bracket when I got it 6 years ago. I have gone thru 3 starters in the time I have had the truck and I put a new starter in today and sure enough it fixed my problem. Starts are quiet and works every time.

Re: ford 47 pickup starter alignment problem
turned out the real problem was the oil pan and mount for the starter. now my problem is installing new one piece oil pan and getting there rear seal in correctly to stop leak.
