Preservation of Newspaper “Dec. 2nd 1927 New Ford ad”
Thanks to my wife, I have an original newspaper ad from Dec. 2, 1927, which is the release date of the Model A. I am replacing the current frame and would like to display it actual size with no matting. Is there a problem if the ad is held in place by the pressure of the glass.

I suggest you use 2 pieces of glass. Sandwich the newsprint between them. You avoid any acidic degradation that way.

Go to a frame shop & get a piece of acid free board for the backing of it & a piece of glass that stops bright light from making it fade.. If you dont, it will be gone Quick ..

That is cool, but experiences learned me that old newspapers aren't worth a cent.
Altough this is very nice to have and display. |

You will want to use an archival backing board that is buffered, acid-free and lignin-free, and you will want your glass to block UV light. (available online or at most good framing stores or arts/crafts supply stores.) Mount your newspaper to the buffered, acid-free and lignin-free backing board using acid-free and lignin-free paper (or Mylar) photo corners. (Using tape, glue, or paper that is not acid-free will damage to the newspaper over time.) Actually, if you really want to conserve your newspaper, then it should be protected from light, heat and humidity. The paper will darken and become brittle and the inks may fade. If you wish to display the newspaper page permanently, you should consider making a display copy of the newspaper using a large format color copier or scanner (without pressing heavily on the newspaper or have a professional reprographics specialist image the newspaper)....or take a high quality photo of it with a digital camera. Then store the original in the buffered acid-free and lignin-free archival newspaper box or folder and then print and frame the copy to hang on your wall. .....my $0.02..... Brad in Maryland |

If you do display the original, use UV blocking glass and don't hang it anywhere in direct sunlight. Nice ad!

Wow, that is neat. Never mind anyone who says that something like that is not worth much. It’s priceless.
Definitely use two pieces of glass or gravity will pull the newspaper down over the years. I didn’t see a cabriolet listed in the picture. Was there one? Mike |

I'm curious: How did this newspaper ad survive it's first 90 years?!

Re: Preservation of Newspaper “Dec. 2nd 1927 New Ford ad”
Just in case anyone is interested, I scanned the ad with my phone a d here is the text.
"FOR SEVERAL years we have been work- ing on the new Ford car. For weeks and months you have been hearing rumors about it. For the past few days you have been reading some of the details of it in the newspapers. Whatever you do today, take at least fifteen minutes to get the full story of this new automobile. You will realize then that it is an en- tirely new and different Ford car, designed and created to meet modern conditions -a car that brings you more beauty, speed, quict, comfort, safety, economy and stamina than you ever thought pos- sible in a low-price car. Automobile history will be made today, for the new Ford is not only new in appearance and performance… it is new in mechanical design. Many features of it are exclusive Ford developments Some are wholly new in automobile prac- tice. Its low price is a reflection of manu- facturing improvements and economies that are as epoch-making as the car itself. Nineteen years of experience in build- ing 15,000,000 automobiles are behind the new Ford car and have counted in its making. Resources unmatched in the motor car industry are its heritage and its birthright. The Ford policy of owning the source of raw materials, of making virtually every part, of doing business at a small profit per car, has cut many dollars off the price you would ordinarily have to pay for a car like this. So we say to you-learn about this new Ford car today. Compare it with any other car in the light-car field for beauty of line-for comfort-for speed for quick acceleration-for flexibility in traffic.. . for steadiness at all speeds for power on the, hills fos econ- omy and low cost of up-keep.. for its sturdy ability to stand up under count- less thousands of miles of service. Then you will know why today will be remembered as one of the greatest days in the entire history of the automobile industry.. . Then you will know why the new Ford car will be your car. NOTE THESE FEATURES Beautiful new low body lines Choice of four colors 55 to 65 miles an hour Remarkable acceleration 40 horse-power Four-wheel brakes Standard, selective gear shift Hydraulic shock absorbers 20 to 30 miles per gallon of gasoline Theft-proof coincidental lock Typical Ford economy and reliability EQUIPMENT ON STANDARD ALL NEW FORD CARS Starter Dashlight Mirror Five steel-spoke wheels Rear and stop light Windshield wiper Speedometer Oil gauge Tools Gasoline gauge Pressure grease gun lubrication"

Re: Preservation of Newspaper “Dec. 2nd 1927 New Ford ad”
Thanks for all the advice. I too am curious on how it survived the last 90 years. I will have to go back to where wife purchased it and ask.
Once again thanks for all the good information.

this is from THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION; "Once mounted, you can either cut a window mat then creates an inner frame for the item that does not cover it or you can use spaces at the edge of the glass to prevent the glass from being in direct contact with the item. You want to avoid this sort of direct contact between glass and item because if you get any sort of condensation or moisture in there the items can become moldy or fused to the glass..."

Bill,I was trying to get a picture of the ones I have that are like yours. On mine the one on the right is printed on the back of the one to the left.I have two of them,so both can be displayed.I don't know just when they were reproduced, but I remember them being on the wall in a mans garage in the mid-70's.I just took them off his wall a couple of months ago.Mine are reprints of the front page of the Springfield daily news, dated Dec.1 1927.The page printed on the back is the Springfield evening news, same date,Dec.1 1927.

Re: Preservation of Newspaper “Dec. 2nd 1927 New Ford ad”
I worked in an archive for a while and we took high quality photos of things like that as it is so hard to preserve low quality paper. If it was a significant item like yours, I would place it between acid free sheets and store it out of the light and display a copy which can be enhanced and cleaned up to be framed. If the item was not significant we would copy it and throw the original away as it is too expensive to save most newspaper, most are already micorfilmed somewhere anyway. One of the best mediums to save something on is old fashioned film as digital storage like CD or DVD has a shorter life span than people realize while when properly stored a photo negative will last longer. Multiple copies on several different types of storage material is a good plan.

Re: Preservation of Newspaper “Dec. 2nd 1927 New Ford ad”
So... How significant is it? It is Dec 2 not Dec. 1. It says Today instead of Tomorrow.
My intent is to frame it pretty much how Brad in Germany suggests and display it in a low level light room. What I have read suggests Brad's method will out last myself plus many more years. If it is truly significant I will do further research and reconsider.

I've gone to Staple's Office Supply and had the original paperwork scanned. Then they "Plak" the copy for me. I hang the "Plaks" in the garage for all to see. Jeff

Bill, are yours from the Springfield Mass.paper? With Springfield being fairly close to Conn.I can see him finding an old Springfield paper to copy.Mine are 17-1/2 X 22.I find the news on the evening page to be most interesting. At the very bottom there is a snippet about a woman jailed who lived as the 'husband' of another woman for two years. There is also the word larceny, but there is a tear right after it on my paper.Another little story reports Mussolini to be seen working at his desk after rumors of his death. Also a price list for the new Ford, comparing it to the price list of the T.
