Default Generator armarture retaining ring groove

I am installing my armature retainer ring into the groove but it wont seat very well, It seems to me the groove is very shallow , I have sqeezed it together slightly then pushed it on it seems like it take but takes very little pressure on the end of the armature then it pops off . Any ideas?

When I had the armature in the lathe to turn the commutator I would also touch up the groove with a jewlers file to clean up any burrs, but it isn't meant to be the only thing locating the bearing, the bearing should fit tighter than a hand push on the shaft ---if it is slightly loose but no play locktite sleeve and bearing retainer works, if it is rattling loose it can be knurled.
