Default B motor fuel pump with downdraft carb?

Hi,

I'm wondering who may have experience with this:

My Model A Coupe is powered by a basically stock B motor. I am swapping the intake and carburetor to down draft and running a single 97 or 94. The motor currently has a block off plate over the provision for the fuel pump, as it was not needed with the gravity feed situation in the A.

I have a nice B pump and would like to use it to feed the new downdraft set up. I imagine this should work just fine, but I'm curious who else has done this and whether they are running a regulator as well?

Thank you

Do you actually have a real B cam with the pump lobe?

Adding the fuel pump , it would be a booster pump to get up that extra few inches. You would have natural flow from the bottom of the tank to an = height at the other end. Be sure the pump is in good shape. They are not cheap and not an off the shelf item. I don't think you would need a regulator, the pump is not high pressure like and electric pump.

I am running a B engine with (sometime one or sometime two) Stromberg 97's. I tried an original B fuel pump and had problems with it leaking as the housings were pretty warped.
I converted a Volvo 122 144 1800 Mechanical Fuel Pump by changing the angle of the arm that contacts the camshaft lobe. The brass hose fittings shown in the photo can be removed and the aluminum housing tapped for 1/8" Female NPT if it suits your installation. I also have a Carter fuel pressure regulator between the pump and the carb(s).
Good Day!

I ran a 97 with a B pump for several years with no regulator and no problems. Rebuild kits are available from early V8 stores if ever needed.

Have 30 A PU with 81 carb. it will run fine on a full tank of gas using gravity only..but at 1/2 +- to empty it will starve .downdrafts are too high compared to A fuel tank outlet....so I had to put elec pump on it..now OK at all fuel tank levels

Been running a B block with stock pump & 97 for over 40 years. No regulator needed.

I'd ditch the mechanical pump. Leave it there for show if you like but I'd not use it. The electric pump out of a carburettor model Subaru will cost you only a few dollars and they are ultra reliable. No regulator is needed. Your car will, of course have to be on 12 volts.
I've been using one for many years on my main touring car (with downdraught carburettor.)
