Default Help with seal instalation

I pulled my worm drive rear apart and I have found a felt grease seal that is damaged..This is a model a but it is a early 28 late February. The first picture shows the original seal and the 2nd picture with the red arrow shows its location. I had 2 modern seals sent to me but im not sure which way to install them Does the open side of the seal go toward the pinion or away from the pinion, And also how does the other seal go that is on the other end of the housing Toward the wheel or center of axle Thanks

Normally when you look into the open end you will see a fine wire spring that helps tighten the seal onto the shaft. This end faces the oil you are trying to keep inside the case.

I was taught the open side of the seal goes toward the side you are trying to keep the oil or grease in. Clear as mud??

Tom types faster than me.

How far down the tube does it go , When I look down the tube it appears to be a small ridge a few inches before it gets to the spindle I guess you would call it Thank you again for all your replies
