Default 1st gear grinds

I took my '29 chassis out for a test drive. There was some gear grinding in shifting from reverse to 1st and downshifting from 2nd to 1st. The rest of the shifts and downshifts were fine. I rebuilt the transmission with as many original parts as possible. All of the gears looked good. Any idea why there is grinding associated with 1st gear?

Do you know how to double clutch? If not, find someone in a local club to show you (or check the archives).

you should rarely ever down-shift 2nd to first gear in the real world driving your A. You also would never ever shift Reverse to first! It would be reverse to neutral come to a full stop and shift neutral to first and proceed. Oil needs to be proper and full. The clutch should be adjusted to fully disengage, and the pilot bearing should not drag. the gears will not grind if their speeds are matched (with practice). You will learn to double clutch as you get to know your car.

I've not had trouble in either of my AA's. I don't know what weight was put in them prior to my obtaining them, but did read posts from fellows who suggested putting a heavy weight oil in the box to slow the gears down. Can anyone verify if this is a legit practice?

You want to be pretty much at a dead stop before going into first. If the car is rolling at all, you're probably good in 2nd gear.

I've had a synchronized 4 speed trans in my car for a few years now, and I still get all giggly when I downshift in 1st. Sometimes I do it just for fun.

Popcorn-guy: Some previous posters have sworn by the 600W lube, others have added STP to 90 W. Do a search, there have been many posts and different recomendations on different weight lubes, Being a non-synchro trans, the idea is to slow the gears down when clutch is dis-engaged.

I'd like to see a follow up on this post. I couldn't shift into 1st gear either just before my clutch went out...
