Default Ever try that Traveler Oil at Tractor Supply?

I Changed the oil the other day and I'm old school so I use straight SAE 30. The Price sure has gone up, I remember when 1 qt was a buck and a half.

I see Tractor Supply has Traveler Oil, SAE 30 Diesel oil in 1 and 2 gal jugs for better price than a single qt.
Anybody try the "diesel" SAE 30 oil?

No, but I'd bet it' s just fine. go for it the key to any oil today is 'change it often' as they said in the day. anything short of bacon grease is A-OK in a Model A Ford.

I've yet to change the oil in my 31, but it's only been a few miles since the previous owner had it changed.

Back in the 60's when my dad had a salvage yard and used car lot, we used Mobil Delvac, which was for diesels. It was much cheaper than other brands and came in a plain white cardboad can with no lettering or logo. You could only buy it by the case.

I had planned on using the 20w50 Castrol I use in my Brit cars..and in my 94 Pickup. It seems to be just the thing for older, higher tolerance cars.

I use it in all my cars with flat tappets. Don't tell anyone. Tractor Supply will raise the price and start marketing it as "zinc-enhanced" for older cars.

You will be fine with that oil. It has a bit more zinc in it than car oil. It used to have more but they keep lowering the amount.

In this shop we use nothing but Valvoline Racing VR1 30 wt in all vintage cars. Lots of zinc, like the old days. Some say pricey but your oil is the lifeblood of your engine.

OK, let the games begin on this one. I am gonna stand way back haha!!

if you've been using non-detergent oil any HD oil will remove ALL sludge. this can be a good thing if you change oil frequently the first few times.

Check to make sure the sweet feed doesn't have added vitamins/minerals...there is Zinc in some of that bagged feed. It's good for our old flat tappet engines, but not so good for drinking.

Why all the flap about "zinc-enhanced" oil for a Model A?? No such thing when A's were new! And some years afterward, too. Unless you have 150# racing valve springs, your A will never know the difference! Non-detergent oil is also non-zinc oil and still a lot of guys insist on non-detergent only!

As with any oils it is all about the additives.

I understand (not confirmed) Diesel oils are formulated with some extra additives to combat the acid build up from the higher levels of sulfur.

Diesel oil may be better for the A for the above reason. As a sitting A will be more likely to get moisture into the oil from condensate. The daily temp cycles cause water to condense on the inside of the engine and will mix with the sulfurs to make sulfuric acid and other nasty things.

This also means the oil should be changed less frequently as the oil is still able to do its job.

Never used the diesel oil but have used the standard in many cars over the years. I have 2 of the 2 gallon jugs of 40w in the shop now.

Just get the kind put up for Horses, and check the label of course, but, generally Horses are sensitive to additives and Horse Feed is generally pure...
