Self exciting one-wire alternators have an internal resistor that helps it to start charging at low RPM. This small load can discharge the battery over several weeks, so it's necessary to disconnect the battery when stored for an extended time. I would also recommend a trickle charger on the battery - connected or not - when parked.

After you get it repaired install a battery disconnect switch. This will eliminate the drain from the alt. That's what I did 9 years ago.
