Wheel play on all 4
I recently replaced shackles and leaf springs on my 1928 Tudor and while wheels were lifted I checked tie rods and ball joints . They have some play , my concern is the back wheels also have the same play . Is this due to a floating axle ? Or is there something else .

Re: Wheel play on all 4
In the rear you may have play between the axle and the hub. They do make a shim that fits over the axle. I am sure other Barners with More Knowledge than I will reply to your Post !!!

Re: Wheel play on all 4
What kind of play is on the rear axle?
With the brake drum and hub mounted, you can have a slight bit of up and down play, but it should be very little. If it's too much your bearings, hub, or axle tube end could be worn, or more likely some wear on all three. |

Re: Wheel play on all 4
Is the rear wheel up and down movement, or if you grab the top and bottom of the wheel, can you rock it by pushing in on top and out on the bottom, then vise versa? If the latter, then it's a loose axle nut.
On the front, hold on to the backing plate, and rock the wheel. If the backing plate doesn't move, but the wheel does, then it's loose wheel bearings. If they both rock together, then it's kingpins |
