Default 8BA Oil Filler Tube Length

Is the 8BA oil filler/vent air intake a magical length? Can i shorten it? If so, what would be the best length? I have a PCV - not a road draft tube. Also running an alternator. Thanks in advance.,...jack

No magical length, not all 8BA 8RT oil fill pipes are the same length, there's at least two different lengths in my experience.
Why are you shortening this pipe out of curiosity?
Martin.

Jack, I replaced my OEM filler tube with a shorter one (machined from aluminum ) as shown below. No magical length required. Just short enough to allow the filter to fit under the radiator hose pipe so as to eliminate the "Dork Factor." You can see the top of the K&N filter. I used. It's an 8BA with early heads.

19Fordy:
That's the look i was going for. What a great looking engine. The filler looks like it is part of the engine, not something left over from another era. Would you mind sharing the ordering info for the air cleaner? I never considered using a carb filter. Thanks,...jack

Jack, The filter I used is a K&N crankcase breather filter with part #F018A4. I couldn't find it on the internet, but I went to the K&N site and found one the same size with part # (K&N 62-1515). Here it is: http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?prod=62-1515
To make it fit your intake you need to make an adapter. Buy the filter first to be sure what size you need to make the adapter. That way you can't go wrong. The photos below give all the info needed. If I had a lathe and the material I would make one for you. When you make the adapter, DO NOT POUND it into the intake or you will never be able to remove it. The fit should be "SNUG"as a bug in a rug according to Mr. Whale.
PS: The air cleaner and heads came from MOTOR CITY FLATHEAD when Mark Kirby was making them in the late 1990's. I believe he is still making them but the company is now called MOTOR CITY SPEED EQUIPMENT. Mark has devoted his life to making an aluminum flathead block with all the goodies. More info. here:

Thanks. I just ordered one of those newer style crankcase breathers. Let us know how you make out with your solution.
