Default Dip stick ?

All my yrs I should know this, but I got cobweb brain damage. Ok new engine
a 59AB with now 3500 miles. Since day one 5qts says full on the stick. Last
week oil change now 4 quarts says full. I just now, think the dipstick washer
slid up, which will sink the stick lower. So before I start pulling dipsticks from
engines in stock ranging from 1934 to 1953, is there a dip stick chart? Like
I said I should know this, but I rebuild engines not dipsticks. so I'm embarrassed. sam

Hey Sam, I changed the pan on my 59ab since it had a modified (baffles) 34 pan on it and I was getting blow by pressure leaks, I put a used pan on that has the vent made for 59 engine. The pan had no dip stick or tube, I ordered one from China that said fits 59ab but it shows over full with 5qrts. I made a new mark on dipstick (washer up all the way) good to go and no more leaks. interesting Ken, I did check the 'stick' washer and it did not slip. Only way to solve
this puzzle is the next oil change maybe I got a phone call and my brain lost count LOL

There is a dip stick chart in one of the Chassis Parts Manuals. I do not have it.

Here is the length chart from the Green Book. On the previous page there's a length for the 4 cylinders at 9-1/8" long.

The chart above lists the length from tip to extreme of handle and not the length from the top of the tube to the tip in the oil. I have a 59A and these are the measurements:

Overall length = 16-3/4" (Green Book lists 16-5/8")
Length form tip to felt washer = 13-3/4"
Tip to full mark = 2-1/8"
Tip to top of danger mark = 3/4"

You're welcome! Can't figure why you would get a quart difference unless the dipstick was being pushed out of line due to the pan oil baffle.

Can you secure the disk on the dipstick where you want it, then fill the block with five qts and remark the full line?

but the disk is swaged right where it belongs plus I painted the 'loop' yellow so
I can see the thing. There is some thing stupid going on here, again last 5 oil
changes = 5 qts full mark this time 4 qts full mark. Is a litre more than a US
quart thats all I can think of, we did not have that litre stuff in high school.

Ok, not trying to be a wise-guy here, but is there any chance you lost track of the number of quarts added?? Being off exactly 1 qt seems like a hint. Sure wouldn't be the first time I convinced myself I had done something correctly to later find out I didn't!!!

The large containers of oil, Castrol and Valvoline, that I have purchased lately for Wallyworld are 5 qts instead of 1 gallon.

As an aside, I purchased a dip stick (Chinesium of course) for a ‘47 Willys - it was beautifully made, correctly marked and....painted
